THE MOKNTtfGr OBEGOlSIAJSr, FREDaX, OCTOBER Zl, 1904. 1& IGHEST OF YEAR Continued Advance in Prices of Pig Iron. iETAL'S ACTIVITY INCREASING Jonsumptlon Has Been Overlapping Production for Several Weeks Steel Rail Situation a Waiting One. I CLEVELAND. Oct. 20. The Iron Trade Ro t-jew this week says: Tho Increased activity the Iron market that started with October jaa kept up, and the past week has seen the highest prices of the year. Consumption has sen overlapping production for several weeks, ud while melters of pig: Iron bought in the narket. particularly foundries, 'And no marked Increase of orders, they are steadily melting nore than In the Summer months. The statistics Indicate that pig-Iron output Jctober 1 wan at the rate of about 36,500,000 ons a year, while In March, April and May, le Spring "freshet" carried It up to a rate ?f 18,000.000 tone. iig-iron production la sow on Its eecond upturn for the year, and ae extent of the movement depends upon sev eral factors. One Is the uncertainty of the Wike In the South. Another factor 1 tie amount of Idle capacity that will come In as prices rise. The advance has not been tnougb yet for the blowing In of furnaoes hat have been waiting for a real profit. But Ihe Important fact la that merchant Blocks pi p!g Iron were reduced 75,000 tons last aonth, with coal and coke production 175 Ions more than In August. It would seem that too much has been oade of the marking up of Southern Iron to MO 50 for No. 2 foundry, and to $11 by borne aroducers. "With little or no Iron selling at Ihese prices, they are scarcely more signifi cant than' was the 412 pric named In early 1002 by oversold producers who had no iron to sell at any price. Northern foundry Irons ive advanced, however, in the past week on ctual sales, and the minimum for No. 2 foundry 1 now $12 at Central "Western fur naces. Bessemer Iron has sold at $12.25 at furnace and $12.50 Is now asked. The steel-rail situation Is a waiting one. Manufacturers cite tho well-malntalned freight Lates of the carriers as an Important element the problem for rail prices for next year. While $24 Is a commonly discussed price, conditions In the next few weeks may fix i2fl. or even $28. as the basis. While rail Requirements for the next year are expected to be far beyond that or ihm, sianaara sec tions are dull, though light rail business la tood. e BIO DE5IAND FOIl WOOL. of Oregon Product Brings Price Close to 20 Cents. iBOSTON, Mass., Oct. 20. Vigorous Supporting Measures Are Adopted Against the Flood of Profit-Taking. NEW YORK, Oct. 20. The reaction in stocks went further today, but the market gave proof of the wardship of powerful supporters, and the weakness was at no time acute. Vigorous supporting measures were adopted at the open ing against the early flood of profit-taking which was brought on overnight by yesterday's sharp break in prices. The reaction was then seemingly allowed to take iia course for a time, and when the selling had exhausted part of its force, another movement toward recov ery developed. News bearing on values played little part In the movement. The determined liquidation In United States Steel stocks had as much senti ment on stocks as anything else, and this oc- urred-ln spite of the news of the excited buy ing of pig iron for future delivery and of very large orders for sew freight cars by the rail roads in expectation of an active revival of business. The complacency with which the reaction was generally regarded was due to the supposition that the great financial forces which have made the market favored a reac tion in order to shake off weak followers and give opportunity for themselves to secure stocks at a lower level which had been sold at a proSt. In accordance with this Idea was the assertion which found prominence during the day that the buying on the decline was of the best character. As the art of concealment of acts is the one most prized In stock-market operations, it follows that the information on this subject Is peculiarly liable to error. The conviction, however, that powerful financial Interests were taking stocks on the decline, and that a waiting demand existed at lower prices did have a strong Influence in dissuading hold era from parting from their stock and in sus taining the tone of the market. Amalgamated Copper weakened on- the an nouncement of the regular dividend being de clared,, and rallied on tho actual declaration. St. Paul and Atchison offered relatively good resistance to depression. The furious buying of Ontario & Western at the last held the mar ket Arm at the rally to the closing. The day's net changes, in consequence, are vry small, and show mixed gains and lewsfca. Bonds were irregular. Total sales, par value. $4,680,000. Notwltbotandlng liberal receipts In the Northwest and easier cables, a firm undertone prevailed in the wheat market at the opening. December was up 0&c to 9iHc. at $1.141.15. while May was c lower to c higher, at $1.13i01.14Hc The Initial firmness was due 'mainly to the reported scarcity of milling wheat. A sharp break in prices at Minneapolis, however, soon brought out heavy sales here by pit traders and com mission houses, the impression apparently be ing that the lower prices in the Northwest foreshadowed a still greater Increase In the country movement in that section. In conse quence, sentiment for a time was rather bear ish. The declining tendency was checked by an active demand from shorts and some of the big bull traders. Following & rally at Min neapolis, the market here also became strong. December advancing to $L16g. May sold up to $1.14. On a sharp break la corn about this time, the wheat market was subjected to heavy realizing sales, as a result of which, sen timent became quite weak. Selling pressure was increased by larger arrivals at Kansas City and St. Louis, and by exceedingly small exports for the day. The market was further weakened by the execution of stop-loss orders, and by a slackened demand for cash wheat at all outside points. The low point on December for the day was reached at $1.14. and' on May at $1.12. Some recovery was made on cover ing by shorts, but the close was weak, with December at $1.1401.14. Final quotations on May were at $1.13. Firm cables and wet weather In portions of the West caused on active demand for corn early in the session, resulting in a stron market. December closed at 48c. The action of wheat and corn had an In fluence In the oats market. December closed at 28c Provisions were steady on fair support by pit traders. At the close January pork was up 5a at $12.40. Lard was down 2c, at $7.17& Ribs were unchanged at $6.47. The leading futures ranged as follows: WHEAT. Open. Hlsh.
