12 - THE MOSXESG OREGONIAN, FRIDAY, OL7TOBEB 21, 190.. WANTS NO GAT8PAW Fiat Against Union by Tele phone Company, UNION GIRLS ARE BARRED President Sabln Promises Good Wages and Fair Treatment, but Girls Say That Is What They Are Striking to Secure. The local management of the telephone company la being strongly backed up by the San Francisco headquarters. A cop-' of the following dispatch from Pres ident Sabln to the Portland office found Its way to the strikers yesterday: San Franciaco, Oct. 19. 1:45 P. St. G. P. Robinson, Traffic Manager; J. H. Thatcher, Dh-leion Manager: In order to avoid all poaslmitty of a misun derstanding you will port this telegram la the operating-room: "Under no circumstances will thl company employ or continue In Its employ telephone operators known to be connected with any UNION' organization. We wni pay nrefrclass wages, we will give first-class treattss&t and will only have the necessary rule to give coed service to our patrons, bat we will not take any chances on our girls being used aa a 'catspaw by the organizations of nien who are liable to call our operator out oa a strike on account of eympatfay." Acknowledge receipt of this telegram. JOHN I. SABTN, President. TM is rwrarded as an Indirect refer ence to the linemen, tvho have actively sympathized -with the struiers ana vrno are said to have long been trying to get the operators to orgarnxa. Commenting on the telegram yesterday, ran of the strike leaders said: We would sot have -unionized except to get Just nrtiat President sawa promises, we uu.ro oil lnnr a that We WOUld CtV U9 the iMinn if nn-mrded fair wases and fair treat ment. We organized because we saw that an attempt was being made to cut wages ana then we strstdc because we found that we .r. hnftur mwfhfinel for organizing. We had a right to organise and It la unjust to be discharged for exercising that ngat ine company openly states that was why we were discharged. "Catfga.w" or no "catspaw," we would never have organized if we had been getting ftart-claas wages ana mm-ciass treat ment. The linemen will hold a meeting tonight at -which it -will be decided wnat, 11 any, notion their organization will take In the controversy. The strikers say they have received a considerable sum from some unnamed local unions with, which to carry ha ormtest. A. local clothier has do nated to the strikers 5 per cent of the proceeds of his store sales lor baturoay ftnmoirnwl. The strikers announce that up to last evening they had secured aoout ibw sig natures to their petition to the telephone company. Two or three more vacancies were filled by the company yesterday. The strikers ot-o cnw'rinp the names of all the im ported girls with the object of getting them published by tne -fuget couna pa- arfl f Tvnsalhle. A rumor is circulating among the strik ers that a large number of girls from San Francisco are on the way to Port land to nil up present and expected va cancies. IN SYMPATHY WITH -GULLS. nmnRrat!c Club Condoles With Striking Telephone Operators. The Multnomah Democratic Club met last night in their headquarters in the Hibernian Hall for their occasional po litical feast The political part of the menu was lost sight of, however, in the sympathy early created by Citizen Parker, who arose to ask the co-operation of the club in expressing sympathy for the striking telephone girls. The motion made by Mr. Parker brought out a long and spirited debate. Several of those present thought that It was not a wise thing for the club to take action at this time until more was known of the merits of the case and the question had been viewed calmly from both sides. The natural sympathy of the Democratic heart triumphed at last, however, and the motion was carried wlthbut one dissent ing vote. The Democrats of the county are, therefore, in sympathy with the strikers and express the belief that the company has acted unfairly with the girls In importing "foreign labor, brought from a foreign country," as stated by the champion of the girls, Air. Parker. The old question of to rally or not to rally came up at the meeting again last night and It was decided in the affirma tive. ITor a long time the club has been trying to join with the Young Men's Democratic Club in a big rally, but neith er side would take tho burden of starting the entertainment. It was decided, there fore, to relegate the whole matter to the executive committee of the club with in structions to arrange the meeting at any cost It was also decided that Friday, November 4, was the time to have the eruption, and that it would be wholly and solely under the auspices of the Mult nomah Democratic Club. If any of the other Democratic organizations want to get Into the fun they can come as the guests of tho parent stock. It was not right, so it was contended, for tho Multnomah Club to do all the work while the other fellows, who seemed to not want to have a meeting at all, to havo even a part of the glory. Therefore, It was thought best to take tHe bit In tho Democratic teeth of the organization and have all the fireworks In their own backyard. The meeting then adjourned In hopes that the 4th of November would bring together a larger quorum than usual to listen to the inspired words of those who are to be brought to Portland to tell of the surety of Mr. Parker's election four days later. MUSIC IN THE CAPE. Popularity of Hotel Portland Raths keller Makes More Room Necessary. Owing to the overcrowding popularity of the recently completed rathskeller feature of the Hotel Portland. Manager Bowers yesterday announced his decision to throw open the magnificent hotel cafe as a place of light refreshment for ladles and gentlemen, with nightly concerts by the Hungarian 'Orchestra from 9 o'clock to midnight. The cafe will accommodate three times the number of patrons pos sible in the rathskeller, and the lofty colling of the huge hall will afford much greater orchestral scope. Here, con venient to the street, the public will be able to hear one of the finest musical organizations of its size in the country, and at the same time be served with all kinds of refreshment ct no greater cost than In the rathskeller. "We were compelled to have more room." said Mr. Bowers yesterday. "The new rathskeller, with the music of that orchestra has proved so popular that we no longer have room cither to properly serve or otherwise conveniently accom modate the patrons who pour In every night. As we could not further enlarge the rathskeller area and . as no other place is available except the cafe, we have concluded to have our concerts there very evening hereafter from 9 to 12 sTHKi JsssWSCKAX Pi liJ. Of course, patrons will continue to be served in the rathskeller as heretofore." With this extension of enterprise on the part of the hotel management, Portland will have one of the most delightful at tractions of Its kind in the United States. Woodmen to Entertain Women.
