ffHB HORNINg DBEGOINIXN, WBDNESD'AY, SEPTEMBER 21, 190. GOLD COINS ON SALE Lewfs and Clark Souvenirs Ready for Distribution. PRICE FIXED BY COMMITTEE First National Bank Orders 500 of the Dollars and Covers the Pre mium Into the Exposition Company Treasury. Souvenir gold dollars of the ILewis md Clark Centennial Exposition -will be placed on sale at Exposition head quarters in the Stearns building at X0:&0 o'clock this morning:. Arrange ments for the distribution and sale of the gold pieces -were made at the meet ing of th,o Souvenir Coin Committee pester day afternoon.. Chairman Fleisch ner presided. The following schedule of prices was agreed upon: One coin for $ 2.00 !Two coins for 4.00 Three coins for 6.00 Four coins for 8.00 31x coins for 10.00 The sixth dollar Is allowed as a pre mium on purchases of live coins. Coins must be paid for before delivery. The committee laid plans to have the coins handled by banks at all points In the Pacific Coast states. An effort will be made, "also, to Interest school children. Every fifth coin disposed of will net the seller $2. A large number of coins will be sold by the young ladies who are taking part In the move ment inaugurated by the Portland Commercial Club. Orders lor the coins have been re ceived from a number of Eastern points, notably New Tork, Chicago, Philadelphia and St. Louis. At home the demand Is strong, as has been evi denced by the large number of Inquiries made the past few dys at the banks. The largest one received so far from local sources was placed with the Ex position Company by tho First National Bank yesterday. It was for 500 coins. For these the bank paid $1000. Under the regulations adopted the bank was entitled to 600 coins, but it waived the extra 100, and these, with their pre mium, will o into the Exposition treasury. This is a clear gift to the Exposition company of $200. President Jklills placed the order In behalf of the First National Bank at the meeting of the co'in committee, and was thanked by President Goode, of the Exposition. All the Portland banks will handle the coins. They will pay for them $2 each and sell them at the same prices. The Exposition Company's office will be tho only place Jn Portland where coins will be sold at the rate of six for $10. Chairman Fleischner, of the souvenir coin committee, said last night that the sale of the gold dollars will be pushed and an effort will be made to got the first lot of 25,000 Into circu lation as rapidly as possible. "Portland people should popularize the Lewis and Clark gold dollar," said Mr. Fleischner. "The way to do it is to buy the dol lars. Every cent of premium earned goes Into the treasury and helps to make the Exposition so much stronger and better. Congress gave us these coins in lieu of a direct appropriation, and we must make the test of them." GIVEN TO LOCAL COMPANY. Contract for Water Pipe and Fit tings to Be Filled In "Oregon. The Oregon Iron and Steel Company has bean awarded the contract for pipe and fittings to be furnished the "Water Board for $25,737.50. This is the contract awarded the "United States Cast Iron Pipe and Foundry Company of Chicago last week for $25,650. At tho time the contract was awarded tho question of Inspection arose as a matter which would add greatly to the cost of the pipe required and In the Ions run cost the city more than would be the case if the contract was given to the local firm. Iuring the argument over the matter It was claimed that Inasmuch as the call for bids did not specify that the pipe would have to be Inspected if constructed outside of Portland the board" could not legally reject the lowest bid and accept a higher one, even though It would be of great benefit to the city to have the work done here. The representative of the Chicago firm agreed to stand the expense of inspection and the board awarded the contract. Mayor "Williams was opposed to giving an outside company the contract when the local firm's figures were very little higher and, after looking Into the matter thoroughly, refused to sign the contract. The board was called together In special session and after an explanation by the Mayor tho former action was reconsid ered and the contract awarded to the Portland firm, of which "W. M. Ladd Is president. . SH0ETE0RN HERD WINS. Charles E. Ladd's Cattle Capture Prize at St. Louis. Charles E. The Meier Sb Frank Store An Apology Is due to the thousand of women who were unable to secure their share of the great bar gain in Embroideries we offered yesterday. The entire lot was practically sold out at 10 A. M. Four times the amount we had would have come nearer to supplying the demand We 're doing our best to duplicate the bargain with good chances of success. Keep your eyes on the Meier & Frank store news. An apology is also due for our inability to supply yesterday three advertised items in the drug sundry line. In our anxiety to always offer equal or better merchandise for less money than any other store, the advertising manager took the authority of duplicating a list of about '20 items at lower prices than advertised elsewhere Monday evening, for Tuesday's sale, being posi tive at the time that the goods were in stock. The store being closed, he was unable to get into communication with the department buyer,. For two of the items we were compelled to offer a different article from that advertised The other we were able to supply after 11 A. M., through the courtesy of a local retail store.
