Experienced Man Loses Alt
Control of Machine.
- ST. LOUIS, 'Aug. 28. Blinded by dust
from the machine of A- C "Webb, of To
ledo, O., Barney Oldfleld lost control of
his machine at the World's Fair auto
mobile speed contest today and crashed
through the outer fence of the course,
killed John Soott, a watchman em
ployed at the park, and inflicted Inju
ries upon Nathan Montgomery, a negro,
from -which he died. Oldfleld -was pain
fully injured and his machine complete
ly demolished.
The accident occurred after a false
Btart. The flagman vainly attempted
' to signal Oldfleld and "Webb, -who
were leading, that the start was not
allowed, but they did not see his flag,
and continued, around the course at a
high rate of speed.
Soon after passing the first turn of
the mile track "Webb secured the lead
by a narrow margin, and the men were
relatively in the same position when
passing the three-quarters pole. In
making the turn "Webb's machine
swerved, and raising a blinding cloud
that completely blinded, Oldfleld and
half smothered him. Not being able to
see that he had completed the turn,
Oldfleld continued his course and
crashed through the fence.
"When Oldfleld failed to appear after
"Webb had emerged from the dustcloud,
there was considerable excitement, but
it was soon announced that he was not
seriously injured. The race was run
later and won by "Webb by a large
margin. It was the most Important
event of the day, the prize being the
Louisiana Purchase Exposition trophy
valued at $500.
In a three-mile exhibition Oldfleld
made the distance in 3:15 2-5.
Through Vith Racing Game.
ST. LOUIS, Aug. 28. After the races to
day Barney Oldfleld said:
"This race is my last. I am through
with the game as far as racing is con
cerned. I may take part In exhibitions,
but no more contests for me. The dust
raised by Webb's machine was so great
that I could absolutely see nothing at all.
I was going fast and was blinded so com
pletely that I had no time to do anything,
and the first thing I knew was being
picked up and was getting Into "Webb's
machine. The mishap was deplorable In
the extreme, and I am through."
This Is the second serious accident in
which Barney Oldfleld has figured. "While
racing at Grosse Point, Detroit, several
years ago, the. steering gear o hie famous
car, 999, became deranged, and he ran into
a man and killed him. Oldfleld suffered
three ribs broken then.
EXPLOSION IN A TENEMENT.
Maker of Frankfurter Loses His Wife
and Baby.
NEW YORK, Aug. 28. Three persons
will probably die as the result of the ex
plosion today in the apartment o Israel
Rosenwelg, in a tenement In Norfolk
street. They are: Rosenwelg's wife, his
3-year-old son and his 3-months'-old baby.
The explosion and a small fire that fol
lowed created a panic in the tenement.
Rosenwelg, who Is a frankfurter peddler,
had filled the tank of his frankfurter
boiler with kerosene and lighted the wick,
it is thought, without screwing on the
stopper.
Nine Bodies Are Recovered.
ANTWERP, Aug. 28. The fire in the oil
tanks near here continued today, but it
is now practically ended. Nine bodies
have been recovered and several are still
missing. ,
The loss Is .estimated at 510,000,000 and
the damage at nearly $2,000,000.
WOMEN RAID SALOONS.
Illicit Places in Kansas Town
Made Wrecks.
Are
' CUBA, Kan., Aug. 28. Four joints or
Illicit saloons were wrecked by women
here and much liquor destroyed. Mrs.
EL O. Fites and Mrs. "William McDonald,
wives of prominent business men, armed
with hatchets, first entered without warn
ing the place run by Ben Hull.
"Without ceremony they began to smash
everything in sight, and soon they had
demolished bar and fixtures and broken
every bottle and opened every keg to te
found. Later they were joined by 23
other women, and the entire party raided
the other four joints in Cuba. The stocks
and fixtures at each place were destroyed
in prompt order.
Finally the women spilled into the
street a great quantity of keg beer that
had been confiscated and stored at the
City JalL
HOAR HOLDING HIS OWN.
Passes Comfortable Day, but Strength
Does Not Increase.
"WORCESTER, Mass., Aug. 28. The
following bulletin was given out at 9
o'clock by. General Rock wood Hoar:
"The Senator has had a comfortable
day, has taken his nourishment and has
held his own, though there is no evi
dence of Increase Jn strength.
"For the first time since his Illness he
called this morning for the newspapers
and showed interest and commented on
matters of public interest."
Millions for Rapid Transit.
NEW YORK, Aug. 28. Eight million
dollars or more will bo expended by the
New York, New Haven & Hartford Rail
road Company for Improved rapid transit
from Now York City to the Bronx and
that part of "Westchester lying along Long
Island Sound, according to Information
given out tonight by President Charles
S. Mellen.
