Newspaper Page TextE IS -FIXED Steamboat Men Held for Slocum Disaster. DIRECTORS ARE HOT SPARED Jury Reports Mate Acted in a Cowardly Manner. HE IS UNABLE TO GIVE BAIL Inspector Charged With Misconduct in Allowing Vessel to Operate and Government Is Also Requested to Take Up His Case. NEW YORK, June 28. The inquiry con ducted by Coroner Berry and a Jury Into the General Slocum disaster was con cluded today, and, after nearly four hours' deliberation, a verdict was ren dered in which' the directors oX the Knlck erbocjeer Steamboat Company, Captain "Vanschaick, of the Slocum; Captain Pease, the Commodore of the company's , fleet, and others were held criminally re sponsible. "Warrants for their arrest were issued. The mate of the Slocum, Edward Flanagan, according to the Jury, acted in a cowardly manner, and the mis conduct of Steamboat. Inspector Lund berg, it was reported, should be brought to the attention of the Federal author ities. The charge in each case is manslaugh ter In the first degree. Ball was fixed by the Coroner varying from 51000 to $5000. Edward Flanagan, the mate, was the first arraigned. Ho pleaded not guilty, and his bail was fixed at 51000. He was committed to jail. Inspector Lundberg pleaded not guilty, and was released on 51000 bonds. Ball was fixed at 55000 each for Presi dent Barnaby and Secretary Atkinson, and bonds wero furnished at once. Captain a Prisoner at Hospital. Captain Vanschaick Is a prisoner In the hospital, captain Pease will not be ar rested until tomorrow, when it is expect ed that the directors of the company will also bo taken Into custody. At the As sistant District Attorney's request, the Coroner committed Assistant Engineer Edwin Brandow and Deckhands Coakley and Handley as witnesses, sending them to the House of Detention. The Jury Is also of the opinion that the system of inspection which prevails in the harbor of New York Is very ineffi cient, and does not properly demonstrate -whether the llfesaving apparatus and fire appliances on the vessels In this harbor are In proper and suitable condition to prevent the loss of life, and we recom mend to the Secretary of Commerce and Labor that he issue such instructions to the supervising and local force of in spectors as will cause them to efficiently and honestly examine the boats plying In and about the harbor. All but Forty Drowned. Formal testimony was presented that 905 bodies had been recovered, of which all but 40 met death by drowning. Floyd S. Corbin, named as one of the directors of the Knickerbocker Company, tonight said he is not a director of the company, having been replaced at the last meeting of the company's stockholders in Febru ary, and that he does not own a single share of stock. He was much surprised by the verdict of the Coroner's jury. THE DEATH ROLL. Gifted Violin-Player, NEW YORK. June 28. Michael Roach, a gifted violin-player who had traveled in many countries, is dead at his home in Hempstead, L. I. Roach suffered from heart trouble, brought on by excessive nlaying on his beloved instrument. Stradivarius. He had for years played frequently more than 12 hours a day. When he fell ill, several months ago, the doctors warned him that excessive devo tlon to music had weakened his heart. and that he must use the bow more mod erately. He observed their injunctions for a time, but found it hard to master Ills passion for music, so that, two weeks ago, he was forbidden to touch tho violin again. He declined rapidly from that time on. Youngest Soldier to Wear the Gray. CHICAGO, Juno 2S.-John Bailey Tyler. of Chicago, is dead at the Alexlan Broth ere' Hospital, after an illness of several weeks. Mr. Tyler, it Is thought, was the youngest soldier in the Confederate army who served throughout the war, other than in the position of drummer boy. He enlisted when he was 12 years old as a cavalryman, serving throughout tho war in D Troop of the First Maryland Con federate Cavalry. Ho was born in Fred eric. Md.t in 1S19. Prominent Chicago Financier. NEW YORK, June 2S.-TulIus A. Kohn, formerly a prominent merchant of Chi cago and afterward a banker and mem ber of the Stock Exchange In this city.
