A MYSTERY TO PARISIANS.
Death of New York Man Recalls Odd
Actons of Lovelorn Sister.
NEW YORK. Jan. 12. John U Living
Eton, whose doath .has Just been announ
ced here, was a member of a New York
family, says a Paris dispatch to the
American. Exactly three years ago his
sister Maria died to a hospital at Neullly.
- " had been In the French capital
during the two years past endeavoring on
the part of himself and two brothers to
secure possession of her estate.
The sister was a mystery to Parisians
for 20 years prior to her death. She
dress ea fantastically and was possessed
of many eccentricities. She continually
called at the Consulate of the .Legation at
Paris with complaints about the neighbors
and there met and fell in love with a
clerk at the Consulate. On one visit she
drew $40.43) from "her pocket and offered
It to him as an Indication, of her regard.
Later she sat for hours outside the Con
sulate for a glimpse of the clerk, al
though she was then SO years old.

BRYAN IN WASHINGTON.
Pays Visit to House of Representa
tives and Senate.
WASHINGTON, Jan. 12-WlMam J.
Bryan was in the House of Representa
tives today,, where he- met and shook
hands with a number of his former col
leagues. He discussed with the members
of the committee on foreign affairs the
need of the possession by this Govern
ment of permanent legation buildings at
foreign capitals.
The safety of the archives and the Im
portance of having a legation perma
nently located In one place impressed him
with the urgent need of the purchase by
the Government of appropriate buildings.

est backers of the peace tribunal.
Mr. Bryan also visited the Senate. Prac
I tically all the Democrats and many, of
J the Republicans met him la the lobby.
Mr. Bryan stated that if any one had
quoted him as favoring, any particular
candidate for the nomination he had dona
so without authority.
Inspection Made of Churches.
CHICAGO, Jan. 12. The city building
department, beginning . with the First
Methodist Church. In the downtown dis
trict, today Instituted a searching inspec
tion of Chicago's churches, rto learn if
they comply with the ordinances provid
ing for the safeguarding' of life.
