Humored Enenireraenta of Gold for Export by Steamer Causes Act ive Selllnar Movement. NEW TORK. Feb. 17. The . movement of prices of stocks today was Irregular. The In terruption to the wire service by the storm was given as one cause of the dearth of out side orders, but business from commission bouses was at a. low level from all sources. The general approval accorded to the petition of the governors of the Stock Exchange to make Saturday a holiday, in addition to the regular Monday holiday. Is a sufficient Indi cation of the small proportions of commission, house business at this time. The industrial stocks had a rather mor prominent place In the trading today than tney did yesterday, but their price movement was very snotty. The speculators who In augurated the movement In those stocks yes terday were Inclined to take profits. This was conspicuously evident In the United States Steel stocks and in sugar. The' operators seemed to be prompted by the hew anti-trust measures In Congress. The bull campaign In Amalgamated Copper was continued this morn ing, and that stock was lifted an additional lt. but the later reaction of the market left only a small fraction of this gain. The rise of 2H in Tennessee Coal was based on the Increased earnings disclosed by the annual re port, and the expenditure of these earning on tne property without any Intimation of early dividend disbursements did not seem to de tract from the favorable Influence. The seven point rise in Anaconda, with a reaction of Hi. was In sympathy with Amalgamated. There waa a notable demand for American Locomo tive late In the day. but Its rise was not fully maintained. Metropolitan Street Railway led a further advance in the local tractions, which was not held. The rather active selling movement which developed midway of the session was prompted by the well-defined rumors that exports of gold were being negotiated for Thursday's steamer. No official acknowledgement of the truth of these rumors could be secured, but the refusal to disclaim them by prominent banking houses gave color to the report Ster ling exchange advanced several points here, i but reacted a fraction of a centime tn' Parts. The rate of time money hero operates as nn j obstacle to an outgo of gold. London was a 1 buyer of stocks here today, and the fact that part of the Erie convertible bond Issue Is to go abroad promises a supply of exchange. On ine other hand, the buying of grain for ex port today was rather light, thus restricting ine -supply or exchange. The question of en gagements or gold tomorrow for export on Thursday Is still open. Damage to -property by the great storm was of some Influence in prompting the light selling. The market closed heavy at about the lowest. There was heavy selling of St Louis & San Francisco funding bonds. The market gen erally was Irregular. Total sales, nar value. $2,290,000. United States old 4s declined U per cent on the last call. CLOSING STOCK QUOTATIONS. CHICAGO, Feb. 17. Wheat ruleddull during the greater part of the session, and weakness prevailed until near the close, when fair buy ing by commission houses and local traders caused an upturn, and the close was firm. The opening was easier on Indifferent cables, May being down a shade to KSUc at 77X6 77ic Selling for the Southwest added to the depression, and the market declined, there being no supporting features, and May sold off to 774c. The impression got abroad that the leader of the bulls was trying to buy wheat around the low point, and tills gave some strength to the situation, which was helped later by the strength In corn and by good cash demand. After selling at i8X May closed Xc up at 774877XC After a high opening, the corn market de veloped considerable strength, and higher prices prevailed throughout the da'y. In spite of heavy selling by commission houses and short selling by scalpers. The close was firm. with May H6Uc higher at 45Xc The increase In the contract stocks of oats invited renewed liquidation In that pit. and the market ruled rather easier. The close was easy. wth May X6Hc lower- at SSlteSCXc Provision were decidedly strong at the. start. keeping pace with the upward movement In hog prices. The better prices brought consid erable realizing throughout the day. and the greater part of the early gain was lost. Pork closed 108124c higher, lard unchanged, while ribs were 24c lower.
