Effort of Professionals to Force Down Prices Demand for New York Public Utilities. NEW YORK. Jan. 20. The opening activity In stocks today was on the selling side, and seemed to be due to operations by room trad ers, based on the weakness developed at the close yesterday, but supporting orders were encountered which put a stop to the efforts of professionals to force prices down, by which. In case of sale, they would have to borrow the stocks for deliver. On the other hand, the buying orders were placed on a scale down ward for the most part, and the recovery came to a stop for lack of motive power. A spurt la the stocks of New York public utilities helped the recovery, the decision, of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Co'urt at Albany against the constitutionality of the New York franchise tax being the reason for the buying of these stocks. It had been clearly expected that the decision would be against the tax. and the effect had been dis counted1 for two weeks past by buying on the confident assumption that the result would be as announced today. This movement, conse quently, spent Its force almost immediately. The market then fell back Into a deeper rut of idleness thanr at any time since the first of the year. Yesterday's few strong spots were lack ing. Amalgamated Copper rose nearly a point at one time, on the ground of rather a vague con fidence that conditions in the trade were great ly improved. Great Northern preferred suf fered in common with Northern Securities on the curb from distrust of yesterday's rumor of a coming increase in the dividend rate. There was much discussion of the action of the Secretary of the Treasury looking to the resubstltutlon of Government bonds for the state and municipal bonds accepted as security for Government deposits during the money stringency last Fall. Bankers were inclined to view It as a suggestion rather than as an order, and as designed to facilitate the con traction of currency, now that funds are flow ing back to the reserve centers. Just as his avowed purpose last Fall was to encourage ex pansion of bank note circulation while the demand for circulation was growing. The ad vance In prices of Government bonds was evi dence of a purpose. In some quarters at least. 10 procure bonds from the onen market in order to be able both to keep out note Issues and to retain Government deposits. The pros pect of gold exports was a continuing influ ence against speculation in stocks. The per sistent apathy of the demand for stocks led to a late selling movement, as was the case yes terday, and the market closed weak and at the lowest In the midst of the largest activity of inc cay. Bonds were dull and lrrerular. Total snl. $-.045,000. United States 2s. registered, tlw 3s, registered, and the old 4s. registered, ad vanced c and the old 4a. ts li per cent on the last call.
