THE MORNING OREGONIAN, TUESDAY, JANUARY 13, 1903. IS WHEATEXPORTSTOFRANCE ONE OP THE BULL- FACTORS IX THE CHICAGO WHEAT PIT. Heavy Rains In Argentina .and Small Receipts AIko Help Prices BreaU on Unloading. CHICAGO, Jan. 12. "Wheat -was rather un settled an'I In spite of bullish news, which cmiwd a firmer feeling early in the day. the tendency was toward lower prices, influenced Jarjjely by a continued liquidation by local longs. A rciHirt that a considerable amount of w!.cat was being worked for shipment to France, was an early bull factor, as wre the small receipts and heavy rains in Argentina. Therj was also a good cash demand and re ports of a licavy export business at the sea board helped prices late in the day. May epened c to c lower at TGc down to 7&Uc and quickly sold back up to 76c Selling by pit traders caused a decline to 75?,75&c, when there was an advance to 76c Unloading ty :ongs brought about another break and the rrlce went down to 7.r7uc with the close Vic lower at 753i4f75&c. The trading In corn was extremely dull and the market was featureless. Demand from shorts was the main strengthening influence, althcrtgh a fair export demand also favored the bull tide. The weather -was favorable for the movement, but the receipts were only mod erate, due to the car situation. May 'closed SiC? lower at 43$&a The cats pit was almost deserted. The close was firm with May Uc higher at 34?ic- Previsions were Arm on a marked decrease In receipts of hogs and higher prices at the yards. The market closed strong with May pork up 20c, lard 10c higher and fibs 15gl"bc higher. The leading futures ranged as follows: "WHEAT. Opening. Highest. Lowest. Closing. London Dealers Bid High on Holders of Pacifies EaulncnK in Prunes. NEW YORK, Jam 12. Hops opened showing a marked firmness, but trading was light, the sellers being indifferent The state wires re port that dealers are paying 30c to 32c for In ferlor grades, and that better grades are held at higher values. A London cable reports firm markets, and dealers there are bidding high figures to holders of Pacifies here. The market today developed an easiness In prunes, with a selling pressure exerted by two large holders. As a result some shading In values on round lots. Sales covering four car loads of 50-60s were made at the close at 5c A bid ot 5c was refused on two carloads later, but as the holder is weak it is expected the deal will go through. On 70-80s 4&c will buy and 3c will do business on 80-D0s. Sizes 40-50 are offered at TJic In a large waj. .The easiness shown by weak holders has not ma terially affected Jobbing values. The belief exists that the easiness is only temporary and has been Induced by the slow movement in jobbing quarters, allowing of accumulations In brokers "hands. Wires from the Coast re port but little offering. Foreign cables advise of a 6trong Hamburg market. Locally, little export demand is noted. Oregon prunes show a quiet Interest, with a movement Jobbing in character. Salmon Is dull. Lima beans are more active with considerable Jobbing sales at $3 05 per bushel hercx PORTLAND MARKETS. Closing Prices of Stocks, at Xevr York Ae the Lowest of the Day. t NEW YORK, Jan. 12. The large selling which developed on Saturday, and which was renewed after the opening today, served to take the vigor out of speculation, and the stock market sank Into a condition of semi stagnation during the afternoon, with an oc casional "downward dip In prices. The market closed with one of those selling movements in force, making the last prices aboutthe lowest of the day. There was nothing In the news to offer a rational explanation of the 'decline, unless It might be a rather less liberal dispo sition on the part of the banks and trust com panies In the matter of placing sHbrt-tlm loans. The movements of cash, so far as known to the public, continued to Increase the reserve!1 of the banks. The Sub-treasury operations have yielded rather more than $1,000,000 to the banks since Friday, and the bank state ment of Saturday Is believed to have under stated the reserve Item at that time by several million dollars, owing to the fact that the heaviest movement last week came late, and so figured for less than it should have in the weekly averages. Some importance is at tached, however, to the sustained upward movement of sterling exchange in connection with the corresponding rise In London dis counts, which made a greater advance today. It is believed that unless money rates here arc allowed to advance again the demand from London will result in an outgo of gold. This would interfere with the plans of the mana gers of the speculative campaign In stocks, who have counted upon a period of easy money. The call for a 10 per cent Installment of the $50,000,000 subscription to the International marine syndicate, which will call for $5,000,000 on Saturday, Is another factor In the situa tion. Recent Increases In bank and trust company stock will call for some $S.000,000 to take up new stock, and In . the more remote 1 future are the proposed Pennsylvania stork 1 issue and the presumption that the purchase for control of Reading will be followed by the issue of some new securities against the hold ings. Rumors continue busy also with alleged plans for retiring the Atchison debentures with a new bond Issue. The quick multipli cation of these posslblo new offerings In the stock market has had a rather chilling ef fect. The numerous rumors -of further railroad combinations which were circulated failed to have a reviving effect upon speculation, either because of this new sollcltudo over the effect upon money supplies or because the rumors showed some lack of Inventive power. A com bination of Atchison and Rock Island, a Rock Island outlet to tidewater by way of tho Erie, !l the purchase of Chicago Great Western by Rock Island, the purchase of Atchison by Pennsylvania ana an absorption of Southern Railway by Pennsylvania, were some ot the rumors which were formulated during the day without producing much effect. There was some early strength In Atchison and Sugar. , and later advances in some specialties, which j were unexplained by any news. ! Speculative bonds were weak In sympathy 1 with stocks, but the Investment Issues were firm. Total sales, par valuo $2,710,000. United states Donas were unchanged on the last 'call.
