Some excitement was caused here tonight by a report that an anarchist had succeeded In entering the Elysee Palace. The revenue de-. rived from the maritime customs at the treaty ports of China for the year 1902 amounted to 30,000,000 taels, as against 25, 500.000 taels in 1501. The year 1902 ends with large stocks of goods on hand and gloomy prospects for the Import trade, owing to the continued lttcin exactions and the decline in the purchasing power of silver. Illness of Senor Sagasta. MADRID, Jan. 5. Former Premier Sa gasta is seriously 111 from bronchitis, com plicated by gastric complaints and fever. His -temperature is high. WASHINGTON, Jan. 5. At noon today the House reconvened after a holiday re cess of 15 days. Many members had not yet returned from their homes, and there were not over 100 membero on the floor when Speaker Henderson called the House to order. Dewltt C. Flanagan, who was elected to succeed the late Representa tlve Salmon, appeared at the bar and took the oath. Hull, chairman of the committee on mil Itary affairs, then asked unanimous con eent for the consideration of the bill re ported from his committee to create a gen eral staff for the Army. Richardson (Tenn.). the minority leader, said he did not believe such an Important measure should be considered by unanimous con sent, and he objected. Hull then moved the passage of the bill under suspension of the rules. Hull said the measure had the unanimous In dorsement of the military committee, reply to a question by Mr. Bartlett. (Ga. he said that the General of the Army at present was a myth. Bailey, a coachman, died under mysterious circumstances last nigni. anu indications are that he was poisoned by HHnklnrr from a small Vial Of Whisky which contained a white sediment On the bottle was a label completely hiding tho contents and bearing the inscription, "Happy New Year. Have a drink with me." According to Mrs. Bailey, her hus band came home at 11 o'clock and after bathing remarked that he guessed ho would take a drink from his New Year's gift. He drank about half an ounce and shortly after retiring he complained of cramps and remarked that he believed ho had been poisoned. Mrs. Bailey aroused the neighbors, but by the time assistance arrived her husband was dead. Mrs. Bailey states that when her hus band returned home from a barn where he was employed he brought the bottle with him, but did not teH her where he got It. The police authorities arc now making an investigation at the barn. COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., Jan. 5. Mrs. J. E. Bailey, wife of a coachman of George N. Klllborne. was declared to bo out of danger from strychnine poison ing taken into her system last night by drinking from a whisky bottle from which her husband had drunk. He died in agony at midnight. The case promises to develop one of the greatest murder mysteries In the history of the Pike's Peak region. Mrs. Bailey, since her recovery, tells a story that Indicates that some one dellb eratley poisoned her husband by means of a bottle of whisky, given him as a New Year's present. Mrs. Bailey took a drink of the liquor after, her husband had been thrown Into convulsions In order to wee what was In the bottle. who was found guilty of robbing and murdering Gee Yen. a Chinese gardener, in this city several months ago, was sen tenced by Judge Roloff to serve 40 years In the penitentiary. James Young, who was with Brown at the time the crime was committed, escaped from the Ogden jail the night he was placed there and no trace has ever been found of him. He has a long criminal record In Idaho and Utah. Returns to Stand Trial. IOWA CITY, la.. Jan. 5. Mrs. Ella Galla gher, Indicted two months ago on a charge of perjury growing out of her trial for the murder of her husband, returned here to- ' day and surrendered. She stated that she had been visiting relatives at Kankakee, 111. A hired man. named Holaday. who I was charged jointly with Mrs. Gallagher with committing the murder, was given a life sentence. refuse to return to work unless granted the Increase asked for. No trouble has occurred today, as the police and militia are guarding the plant. Considerable loss has thus far been sustained because of the closing down of the plant, and If present conditions continue, the loss will aggregate an enormous sum. PRETENDER RETREATING.
