Bought Openly by Brokers "Who Usually Represent Gould Interests Prcusure on Union Pacific. NEW YORK, Nov. 17. The stock market presented few. If any, marked characteristics today. Although Lottdon prices showed a marked Improvement, the opening here was decidedly Irregular. This was probably caused by the liquidation of those who withstood last week's depression as well as by the profit-taking of speculators who bought during that same period. These uneven conditions gave way to a better feeling before the end of the first hour, when It became evident that certain vague rumors of "trouble" were unfounded. The feature of the early trading, as well as of the entire day, Ttras Manhattan, which, was ex ceptionally strong and active, making a max imum and net gain of over five points on trans actions that more than exceeded four-fifths of the day's operations. The rise in this tfock, which was bought openly In big blocks by brokers who usually represent Gould Interests, revived the old story that Manhattan Is to bo taken over by the New York Central by a guarantee dividend. No confirmation of this was obtainable, nor did any great amount of credence attach to It. Considerable attention Tvas drawn to St. Taul by reason of Its rather Irregular movements, and the stock closed with a slight loss. New York Central, which made an early gain of one-half point, lo3t much of its advance, and Baltimore & Ohio fell over a point from the top, in spite of its good showing In earnings for the fiscal year. Other active railway Issues that displayed heaviness Included the Pacific group, the pressure against Union Pacific alone being marked. In the special class, Colorado Fuel, United States Steel, American Smelting, Sugar and a few others were steady. Sugar nSaking a material net gain. For the most part, however, changes were unimportant dur ing the early session, and the market was nar. row, traders showing a disposition to await developments In the local financial, situation. The chief feature In this quarter was the transfer of $750,000 to San Francisco and $500, 000 to New Oreleans, making a total of $1,000, 000 to the first named center in tho last four days. This drain on local resourcesSwas not regarded with favor. There was practically no change In foreign exchange, demand sterling ruling at $4 S7. While bankers say they look for no Immediate exports, the fact that three Tast ships landing at French ports leave for this city during" the week created some un easiness. Call money was as high as- 6 per cent. London bought about 25.000 shares in the early declines, and sold the greater part on the rise. The Increased dividend In Nor folk & Western common failed to bring any material improvement to that stock, although dealings were moderately heavy. The decline or 314 points in General Electric resulted from reports of labor troubles at the company's works at Schenectady. Profit-taking In the last hour brought recessions to a number of active Issues, and. wMle the market rallied, the close was irregular. The question of increased rail way wages continues to be a matter of serious discussion, as well as the congestion of frieght traffic on the leading.roads, and it la becoming clear daily that the capacity of practically every trunk road will be taxed to the utmost. Bonds were Irregular on a small range. To tal sales, $2,015,000. United States old 4s- de clined Y per cent on the last call. Closing: Stock Quotations. o STOCKS.
