THE MORNING OREGONIAN, MOKDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 1902, II APPLES' OFF YEAR Big Crop Coming in and Poor Demand. THERE IS NO SKIPPING OUTLET Oily Very Fancy. Stock Can Find a Market Outside This State Total Production, of United States. The situation is not a fax-orablo one for Oregon apple-growers. A big crop has been produced in this; state, and .there is practically no demand for ordinary stock, except for the local trade There is no shipping outlet for anything except hlgh-grado varieties, such as Spltzenbergs. Ncwtons and Jonathans, nearly all of which go to markets on the Atlantic 6eaboard. Most of the.e shipments are mad,e direct from the growing districts in Southern Oregon and Hood River. There are thousands of boxes of other varieties. Ben Davis, Bald wins, "VVinesaps, Ganos and Greenings still In growers' handi", with practically no market, extcpt at extremely low prices. In Southern Oregon there are probably 40 or 50 carloads, running about COO boxes to the car, that have not been moved, and cannot bo at present. In Eastern Oregon, around La. Grande, and" In Southern Idaho, 100 or more cars of medium grade apples eannot find a market at prices growers are looking for. "What will be done with this great surplus stock is an,open ques tion. At present it does not appear profitable to turn the apples into cider or vinegar, anjl If they are dried they will encbuntcr an al ready overloaded dried fruit market. ' "Washington raises enough apples now to sup ply its own markets, and has no call upon this state. Fruit grown aroupd Wenatchee and In the Yakima. Valley provides for tho Puget Sound trade, as well as the markets of British Columbia and Alaska, and the terri tory around Oakesdale furnishes npples for the district northeast of it. Apple-growing in tho "Willamette Valley is practically a failure, with the fruit pests and worn-out orchards that have not been replaced. It Is difficult at present to give any figures on the Oregon apple crop of this year. Tho state last year produced 830.000 Ijoxes of fresh and 150,000 pounds of dried apples. At the beginning of the present season, thero was a great deal of talk of a shortage, but" from tho way that apples have been coming In and tho slow movement. It is evidence that the yield has not fallen far short. As noted In an accompanying table, the ap ple crop of the United States for the current year is estimated at 43,000,000 barrels, as com pared with 20,070,000 barrels last year. As for quality, this is far from satisfactory in the Central and "Western States, but in New Eng land It Is very much better than last year. New Tork State has a big crop. In the older established orchard section in the Middle and Eastern states the Increase over last year's failure Is very "pronounced. In the Central "West there are sharp gains, while In tho Southwest, a territory -last year favored with exceptionally good yields, tho crop this season Is unusually deficient. The production of apples In the United States for nine years was as follows: $1 25 per crate; Corn! choc, $1 5; quinces, Ore gon, S5c?$l per box; cranberries, Tillamook, ?7 per barrel; jCapo Cod. 0; Jersey. 11312: persimmons. $1 25 per box. It may be stated that a new apple-producing district is coming to tho front. The Chicago Packer of a recent dato said: Many apple men wllj be surprised to learn that a tralnload of 14 cars of apples Is in the jelty from New Mexico, a state that Is not looked upon as ah apple producer. If told that this is only a part of a shipment of 200 cars. not only from the same state, but from one point In that state, they will bo still more surprised. The train was loaded with 0000 box,es of apples, which was the wind-up of a shipment of 200 cars, containing 100,000 boxes of apMcs. which was shipped this season on commlssy)n by J. J. Hagerman, from his South Hpring orchard. New Mexico. They were shipped from Roswell. a station about six miles from Mr. Hagerman' s orchards, on tho Santa Fe road. The apples consisted of tho following varieties: Ganos. Mammoth, Black Twig, "Winesap. Arkansas Black. Missouri Pip pin. Jonathan and other choice varieties. Next to Colorado. New Mexico has produce? the most perfect apple this season. Its fruit. year in and year out. Is almost entirely free from blemish, owing to the climate. These ap pies were grown at an elevation of 4000 feet. and Irrigation was employed. It is said no Insects or disease of any kind are to be found in tho orchards of New Mexico, Mr. Hagerman has CC.000 trees on 800 acres at South Springs. This Is the second crop of any size from his orchard, which is young yet. being but nine years old. Last year. Porter Bros. Co. handled 15,000 boxes from this or chard, Its entire output. In another year or two It is expected the orchard will produce 200,000 to 300,000 boxes, as five bushels to the tree would not be much of a vJeld, The earliest installment of apples from the orchard came to Chicago In a manner not to attract attention, but Mr. 'Hagerman decided that the wind-up shipment was worthy of some attention. On each car In the train is a ban ner, running the entire length of the car. con taining some terso expression designed to call attention to New Mexico as an' apple-producing territory. The following is some of tho matter appearing on the banners: "Three hundred artesian wells, 500 gallons each." "Two million apples and not a single worm.' "J. J. Hagerman, South Spring orchard, Ros well. N. M." "Irrigation did it at Ro3wcll, N. M." "From Roswell. N. "M., the orchard of the Southwest." "No drouth in the .Pecos Valley." "Nine million pounds of apples from O-year- old orchard." "Five, hundred thousand acres awaiting de velopment "at Roscrell, N. M." v "Sixty thousand tons of alfalfa a year." ': PORTLAND MARKETS.
