THE MOKNING OEEGONIAN, TUESDAY, OCTOBER 28, 1902. 13 END OF HOP FUTURE! Burnett Decision Will. Put. a Stop to Contracting. WILL BENEFIT THE INDUSTRY Local Market Strong:, With Sales Aliove 25 Ccntn pcrmaa Mar ket Are Advancing Sal mon in the East. Nothlnc has created so. much. Interest In the hop market in ten years as the decision of Judge Bumett at Salem in the Backhaus case, in which he held that the contracts were not enforceable. Steps have already been taken to appeal the case to the State Supreme Court, and. If the amount in consideration will war rant it. it muy go to the court of last resort. It is believed that not more than one-tenth of the- contracts are yet undelivered, so the ef fect of the decision will not bo great from a monetary point of view. Had the case been decided a month ago there would be a dif ferent story to tell. The dealers who win be principally affected are those who hold unde livered contracts and have in turn contracted with consumers or other dealers to deliver hops at prices below the present market values. However, the number of those caught short Is probably not large. The main effect of the decision will be to 'put a stop to contracting In the future. As far as the majority of the trade is con cerned, they are not sorry for it. A large proportion of the business this year has been in futures, and trading of this sort is always subject to manipulation. The Portland market yesterday was not so active as last week, though the feeling was Just as strong. A number ot sales wereado at 25 cents, and one lot of70 bales at Wood burn changed hands at 25 cents. Thirty bains were sold at Sllverton at a high price. but the figures were not divulged. A Portland dealer offered 26 cents for one small lot and 2Gu. cents for another, both fancy hdps. but the -offers were not taken, the growers holding lor more. Private advices reported German and New Tork State markets improving. Ger man markets being 1 cent higher. Brewers are not taking hold freely yet. Receipts at this point hold up to the average. "United States Consul Marshal Halstead, at Birmingham, England, reiwrts 'to the State Department, under date of October 8: "There is some anxiety In Great Britain about the hlsrh Trices which foodstuffs are likely to reach during -the coming Winter. They are thought high enough now, and the prospect of a still greater advance is not pleas ing, in view of the experience- for several years past of hlsh-nrlced provisions and dear coal. This enhancement of the cost of living has not been accompanied by a general In crease In the wage scale or In the number of possible hours of employment. Recently a Lon don newspaper offered consolation to careful housewives who, were complaining that "the prices of potatoes were already going up, by reportlne that there was no disposition In Covent Garden to believe In the possibility of a iKitato famine this Winter, because there is this year no demand In America- for foreign potatoes, that country having Imported last year thousands of tons of potatoes from Eng land and the Continent, so that this year, un like last year, the whole of the English sup ply is coming Into the English market, as well as the surplus Continental supply, and the last reports show that the ravages of blight are not to serious as had been expected. The course of today'B stock- market gave little promise of any change from last week's dull, and . narrow xondltlons. Trading was very light, and the professional element was still in control. Reports of- fresh labor troubles among the railroads running into Chicago were heard. Traders received no encouragement from London, where quotations for the international stocks! were fractionally lower. Colorado Fuel & Iron was the most active feature of the opening, advancing over 3 points on moderately heavy transactions, but losing fully half its advantage before the close. B & O. was extensively traded in at an opening decline, and Lackawanna sold up 1 cent at tho first and only offering 'of the day. By the end of the first hour the weakness of the list .became more marked, though with no direct evidence 'Of pressuro to sell. Losses of a point or more were then shown by Atchison,- New" York Central, Pennsylvania, B. &.O., Read ing. Erie, .Louisville & Nashville, C. & O., Norfolk & Western, Texas Pacific, Missouri Pacific St. Louis Southwestern preferred, MIn- neapolls, St. Paul & Sault Ste. Marie, "vm bash, Toledo, St. Louis & Western, Canadian Pacific, Sugar, Amalgamated Copper -.and Leather .preferred. -With scarcely an excep tion, the heaviness of these Issues continued throughout the day, and In some instances be came more acute. There were" a few feeble rallies, but these were limited to fractions, and the. early afternoon brought a turn of general weakness. The selling seemed to come from small hold er on the outside. London sold the list im partially 'to the, extent of about 15,000 shares and bought moderately of Northenj-Securities. Commission-houses cut no figure in the day's operations, and traders viewed the situation with increased indifference. The -only note worthy feature was the decline In the rate for commercial paper, which last week was" prac tically unobtainable at less than the legal rate, but today fell to 505 per cent. Another shipment of Australian gold to this country was reported by the Anglo-California Bank at San Francisco, and the amount, $1750.000, probably will be transferred to this center at an early day. The final hour , found the list even more narrow, wltKa further con traction of business. One of thb special feat ures was a 10-polnt decline in Brooklyn Union Gas, and other high-priced stocks were off 2 to 3 points. Tho active bond issues were weak all around on. small dealings. Total sales." $1,693,000. United States bonds were all unchahged on the last call. ' Closing Stock Quotations. n S3" a 2. STOCKS. Atchison do nfii 37,500j 8S91 87 87 .'Baltimore & Ohio..."
