THE MORNING OREGONIAN, TUESDAY, AUGUST 26, 1902. 13 MONEY DEMAND ON Interior Forcibly Makes Its Wants Known. WALL STREET AGAIN UNEASY Southern Pacific and Its Affiliated Stock Make Good Advances on Bold Operations by Their Speculative Leader. NEW YORK, Aug. 25. Today's etock mar ket reflected a very determined demonstration for an advance, but effective operations were confined to a very limited number o stocks. The speculation was clearly under the same auspices as that which originated In Southern Pacific last Week and which was predicted upon the return to the street of a well-knpwn speculative leader. The boldness and the dash or today's operations were Indicative of tho personal direction of this leader. Tho early advance in Southern Pacific was taken ad vantage of to effect very heavy profit-taking, which completely wiped out opening gains. Instead of resuming the campaign immediate ly In that stock. It was shifted to its af filiated stock, JJnlon Pacific, and to Balti more & Ohio in the East. The sympathetic response, of these movements was almost wholly confined to stocks immediately related. In the case of Baltlmoro & Ohio there were Pennsylvania and (Jiesapeake & Ohio. South ern Pacific made rime recovers'. In sympathy With Union Pacific " There were gains here and : there among tho grangers, but on very light transactions. Northwestern's 2-polnt rise. In response to the favorable annual report, was made on a single- transaction. Minneapolis, St. Paul & Sault Ste. Marie advanced violently 54. and Evansvllle &. Tcrre Haute gained 3Vi without explanation. In the railroad district, other gains were few among obscure . stocks. The express stocks again made a notable advance. In concert with' no news to throw light on the movement. Among the specialties. West ern Union, Manhattan . and Tennessee Coal Were the most ' conspicuous examples of strength. It was a notable feature that a large mass Of securities of very prominent railroad com panies lay practlcaly dormant throughout the cession, and there were prominent examples showing net losses. This disinclination to fol low the bold leadership proffered by the actlvo stocks was due to the uncertainty over the zr.or.ey situation. On Saturday afternoon, after the Stock Exchange had closed, the Subtreas ury was called upon to transfer - $620,000, which was deposited for the purpose of In terior points. Today $400,000 additional went to Chicago, and the rest to New Orleans. New Tork exchange at Chicago remained at a dis count today of 20c This Is pretty conclusive evidence that the interior demand for ' cur rency has set in In force. Today's foreign exchange market was easier in spite of higher discount rates in London, lower sterling at Parts and considerable sales of stocks for london account here. The rate for call money was also undisturbed, opening at 4 -per cent ttud yielding, to below that rate. The con st jcuously strong stocks closed active and at thebest, making the closing generally steady. The bond market was not very actlvo out eldc of Union Pacific convertibles, but was strong. Total irales, par value. $4,075,000. United States bonds all advanced M per cent on the last call. Closing Stoclc Quotations. STOCKS. Atchison v ... do pfd . . Corn led all other grains In the point or activity and price ad vances today. The market gained strength rapidly on the continued ikmall receipts and poor grading, only to lose part of the advance again as-soon as the longs wanted to take a little profit Stocks of corn here have de creased rapidly during the past week until to day there were only 2,005,000 bushels on hand. September was hard to buy, and was taken freely whenever offered. There was no good advance, however, until corn showed good strength, and the cash de mand was reported Improved. Later, the Northwest bought fairly, and then on excellent seaboard clearances prices made good gains. Ore In the Cracker-Oregon Assays $1000 Per Ton, While Sulphides Go as High as ?3S3. SUMPTBR, Or., Aug-. 23. (Special.) In the Crncker-Oreson property, near the E. & E. mine, a rich strike of free gold ore has been made that Is causing much ex citement The ore Is the characteristic mother lode grade, which in the E. & E., North Pole, Columbia and Golconda car ries high values. The richest of" that just opened in the Cracker-Oregon, assays about $1000 pef ton, -while sulphides are found on either side of the rich streak of free gold assaying- as high as J3S3 per ton. The shoot 'Was struck in a crosscut being driven for the ledge at a vertical depth of scarcely more than 70 feet. This line showing so near the surface Is more than could be expected. The Cracker-Oregon vein, being parallel of the North Pold and E. & E. vein, and .in close proximity. Is in reality one of the mother lode system, it has been tho the ory of mining men In the past that the four big properties were on one groat vein. Since very similar ore Is being found in one that has to be admitted a parallel, many have concluded that what has been known as the mother lode vein is a big vein system. If this theory Is established. It will enhance the value of many Immediately adjacent properties and open a much larger possibility for production In that district. Bear Hunt for President.
