s THE MOBSINO OKIJGONIAN. TUESDAY. AUGUST 5, 1902. 13 STOCKS FALL AWAY Money Outlook la a Most Re pressing Influence. DEALING DOWN TO ALONE POINT r r.inr m on Ti-nnTiicInTi at YTif Tin ness of the Trust Companies Is tho Key to the Cautions Feeling;. NEW "FORK. Aug. 4. There was no 'strong Influence at Work In today's stock market, and the rate of activity fell away to about the dullest of the year. The closing of the London Btock Exchange was only a slight factor In the dullness. The consideration of the future of the local money market was a more effect ive consideration. The senormous expansion- of the business of the trust companies is the key to the cautious feeling which gains force as the period approaches for the Interior de mand for currency. Today's developments teem to show that the outward movement of gold Is over for the present, owing, probably, to the success attending the French rente con version plan. Discounts In Paris today fell tc nearly 2 per cent. An advance In the sterling rate there Indicated renewed remittances to London to be "placed in the loan market there. Aside from this general repressive Influence, only a few stocks were affected by Individual causes. The Iron and steel group had some advantage In, the brilliant trade prospects, the strong semi-annual report of the Rcpubllo Bteel Company, rumors of coming develop ments concerning the Pressed teel Car Com pany and Inspired Intimations of large earn ings for July" by the t7nlted States Steel Cor poration. . , The Government's favorable estimates of the August first cotton market had somo effect on cotton-carrying railroads, and an attempt was made to advance the coalers on the idea that coal mining may be resumed coon. But the effect was only transitory. Profit-taking by the room traders who had been the only "buyers caused prices to retrace their course. One or two stiffened up at the last, notably Texas. & Pacific, but the closing was dull and irregular. - There was a violent rise, and a feverish re action in the Central of Georgia Income bonds. Otherwise there was no feaure In the bond market. Total sales, par value. $1,112, 000. United States bonds were unchanged on the last call. Closings .Stock Quotations. BTOCKS. Weak Closing Corn Drops as Resalt of Manipulation. CHICAGO. Aug. 4. Fine weather and. ex cellent crop prospects were almost entirely Ig nored at the opening of the wheat pit in the anxiety of shorts to cover. Gossip bad another deal afoot, this time in September wheat. It was admitted there wer heavy long lines out, and naturally that meant a big short interest. Statistics, generally, were a little bullish, al though, local receipts were very liberal. After a trifling dip early, there was very good buy ing by a prominent professional house. Sep tember opened c to a shade lower at 70 70c to 70c and quickly advanced to 71c Much of the covering -was for foreign houses, influenced by the small world's shipments and the decrease In breadstuffs on passage. At top figures, there was heavy unloading, supposed to be for the Interests that ware supporting it early, and as a result September slumped to 003C9c and closed weak, ?&c lower, at 63c There was good early strength, In corn. In duced by very small receipts, but it did not hold. As in wheat, there was talk of manipu lation of September options and all the mar ket needed was to slump sharply and heavy selling by the bulls, supposed to be under the deal. September closed weak, Ha down, at 5757c . Oats felt the bullish Influence of the corn 'advance and light receipts and good ad vances.
