THE HORDING OKEGONIAN, RiUEDAY, -TONE 28, 1S02. 13 TRADEQUTLOOKFINE Six Months Close With the Prospect Never Better, HAVE SELDOM BEEN AS GOOD No Ground lioat, and Distinct Gains Made in '.Many Lines Over tne Best 'Of Previous Years. I . NEW YORK. June 27. Brafistreet's to irorrow -will say: The current -week closes a six months pe riod, which, as regards the volume of business done, excepting .peculation, and general pros pects at the close, has had few equals, and no superiors. Thus ends quite sensationally a fiscal year which, owing to smaller crop yields, gave little promise at Its opening. No ground appears to have been lost, but on the contrary distinct gains over the best of previous years have been noted In many lines. Profits may have been smaller, but the volume of trade turned over has about made up for this. Ex port trade In agricultural products Is one of the Xew lines to suffer In comparison with previous 3 cars. Vnseasonably cool weather Is a. draw back to Immediate retail distribution, and ar rerts the progress of the corn crop East and West. Confidence In the outlook, however. Is cIdenced by the continued heavy Duying ior Fall delivery noted In the great growing sec tions of the West. This Is also reflected by a continued large Increase In railroad earnings over the beet results of previous years, except Rhere. as In the case of coal roads, distribu tion Is paralyzed by the wholesale shut-down of production and consumption. Aside from th's Single exception, however, the general In dustry situation has rather Improved. The price movement has been Irregular, In keeping with varying weather conditions, as far as agricultural products arc concemed Cotton moved higher earlier on continued dry weather reports from Texas and Louisiana, but rains at the close of the week in Southern Trxas gave hopes of a change there. In ce reals, the features have been the strength of corn, on reports of cold weather, and the ad vance In oats, due to short supplies and Urge cash demand. Wheat has fluctuated within narrow limits, but the large decreases in sup ples have constituted a balance to the quite favorable reports as to the Winter and Eprlng-l-!anted crops. At this, usually the dullest period of the year, the movement of general merchandise Is still very large. The coal strike dulls trade at the loading Eastern markets. A lull in the demand for lumber at retail is noted at New Lnrk. Philadelphia and other cities, but the mills are Arm as to prices. Builders' hardware sales are far ahead of last year. Copper and t.n are very much weaker. Wheat, Including flour, exports for the week aggregate 3.3S2.701 bushels, against 3,680,438 bushils last week, and 4,304.148 bushels in this week last jear. Wheat exports. July, 1001, to date, aggregate 248.668,581 bushels, against 214.51.550 bushels last season. Lusiness failures for the -Reek In the "United Spates number 153, as against In last week; 178 In this week last year; 185 In 1000; IBS in 1609, and 173 In 1808. Canadian failures were not reported. Banlc Clearing;. 2CEW YORK. June 27. FACTORIES MORB ACTIVE. Agricultural Prospects Are Par Above the Average. NEW YORK, June 27. R. G. Dun & Co.'s weekly review of trade tomorrow will say: Fore'gn markets were badly disarranged by the sudden Illness of the King, and tHere was much liquidation prior to the closing of the British exchanges from Wednesday to Monday. Dcnutlc financial conditions are exceptionally satisfactory, and trade Is well maintained, al-th-agh low temperatures interfered with the distribution of mid-Summer specialties. Manu-far.'-.ng operations have increased In activity, esp-ally In the iron and steel industry and textile production, while the constructive work on new buildings and bridges is very heavy. Labor difficulties have not Improved In the an thracite region, but numerous settlements have been effected elsewhere. Railway -earnings thus far reported for June exhibit an average In crease of 4.6 per cent over last year, and 17.1 per cent over 1900. Most of the blast furnaces that were stepped Iby the scaroity of anthracite coal have resumed ith coke, with which the ovens have cstab- lUhed new records bt output, and shipments .have been still larger, owing to the stocks ac cumulated during the car shortage. Eastern manufacturers of footwear report a larger volume of contracts, mainly for delivery lh August and September. Leather has accu mulated, and some tanneries are closed, but belting butts continue In demand at full prices. Raw wool Is In better request at Eastern mar kets, bat the new clip Is held at a. premium that limits trade. Agricultural prospects are far above the aver age, and rapid progress is made with Winter wheat harvesting. Delays have been encoun tered from heavy rain, while injury has oc curred In the Southwest from drouth, but these adverse influences are less extensive than usual. Wide differences between cash prices and next crop options indicate the views ot traders. The market brought little alteration la spot quota tions, light supplies holding cereals fairly steady. Failures for the week number 200 la the United Stales, against 204 last year, and 20 IB Canada, against 23 a. year ago. FORTLAXD MARKETS. Grain Floor. Etc A continuation of the holiday In Europe In tensified the Quietude which has settled over the local wheat market, and there was hot enough business doing to affect quotations one way or the other. Walla Walla was nominal at about 66c, and Valley and bluestem about lo higher, although a much greater premium can be secured for the latter variety for mill ing purposes. There are no further tranrac tlons In freights, tind nothing more Is expected until next week, when Liverpool gets down to business again. , Wheat Nominal; Walla Walla. 66c; Valley, G6tt67c; bluestem, CtgOSc. RECORD PRICE IS MADE, BUT bAX KOT BB HELD. Gates and Cndsay Leaders in Spec ulation Oats Develop Strength of a Genuine Ttnture. Jtilv corn ooena In the East at 6Sic advances to CD&c. a record price, and I then declines to GSTic July oats Open at 44(&944Xc. inmp to 47c, then fall back to 45H915c Wheat closes a shade lower, at 7254c CHICAGO, June 27. This was another big day In corn. Boosted by the fears of shorts and on wet, cold-weather ' reports, July shot up to )Xc, a record price. Th undertone most of the day was strong, but fluctuations were erratic In September buying Was of such a character and volume as to create much interest. This seemed all the more strange when on the bulge heavy selling was Indulged In by a leading professional, and ths market broke from its strong position. The talk of the pit centers around the supposed leadership of John W. Gates as ths bull in July, and John Cudahy as the big short. Renewed sell ing by Cudahy In September after he was sup posed to be the victim of. Gates made the crowd believe that there was a private understanding between them. Closlng prices were Just firm. July Uc up. at CS?ic, and Eeptember Ho higher, at 61961KC Oats stood in the speculative limelight today. From a small business, this pit developed a general trade that was of marked Interest all over the floor. Strength of a genuine nature, seemingly free from manipulation, developed. The situation was brought about by a very strong cash demand. Statisticians report stocks being rapidly depleted, and not a- car of- new oats came today. Crop reports are very bull ish. AVlth No. 3 white selling cash today at 63953J4C, and deltvery day only two days off, shorts covered sharply. Outsiders bought in a healthy .manner. July, new, opened USie up, at 44i944c jumped to 47c, but on profit taking and a break In other markets lost a good deal of Its advance. July closed strong, 1U91UC up. at 45U945Hc S-ptember sold to 33c on the upturn, dipped to 32,4c but closed firm, H9Uo up, at 3354c Wheat was top-heavy on manipulation, and broke after very good early strength. At the outset, the wet weather over much of the harvest country and grasshoppers In the North west brought good buying. Corn bulls bought liberally of September, and set the crowd to guessing over the outcome. Corn was firmer, and together with oats gave wheat strength. When It was seen that corn could not hold its wn price, tho crowd turned bearish In spite of advices that were bullish. Stuff was sold free ly, and weakness ensued. July, which opened unchanged to He up, at 73U973V4C se4d to 73lc, fell off lc and closed Uc down, at 73c September sold as high as 72i72c dropped to 72c and closed a shade lower, at 72c The leading futures ranged as follows: WHEAT. The scale of the last report Is one point for a per fect crop and five for a failure Winter wheat during the month has gained two-tenths, and. luicr rye ui.cc-icuuib, n.us regaining MS condition of May 15. Summer wheat has Im proved three-tenths and Summer rye two tenths. The report shows the condition of Winter wheat to be 2.2 and of Winter rye to be 2.4. Summer wheat and Summer rye are both placed at 2.4. Barley, oats and clover are alto placed at 2.4, potatoes at 2.7, and meadows at 2.4. The report says that the condition of all grain crons was better June "55 of this year than, upon the corresponding date of any of the last nine years; this applies especially to Winter wheat. Potatoes are the only erop which Is somewhat worse than the average. The crop has been damaged by the condition of the weather during May. European Grain Markets, LIVERPOOL. June 27. Holiday. Wheat and flour In Paris quiet. KEW YORK STOCK MARKET. St. Pad Again Leads, bat There Is Jfo Activity Whatever. NEW TORK, June 27. Today's stock market fell Into profound neglect. Except for tho dealings in one or two stocks, which were se lected by the supporters of the market for L their sustaining effect, there was almost noth ing, doing. St. Paul was again the leader, and there was a spurt In Illinois Central during the day, which had no news to explain It. Missouri Pacific continued In good1 demand, but its rise did not extend to a point at any time. The Industrials were weak In spots, but were even more neglected than railroads. Th passing of the dividend on Colorado Fuel. caused a drop of 4 points In that stock on active selling. The stock fluctuated feverishly all day, and closed with a n't loss of only 154. The passing of the dividend on Ice preferred was reflected In the movement of this stock, the preferred declining an extreme 3ft and closing with a recovery of 1;. Amalgamated Cooper j was under pressure Again, hut met support about 63, as os the previous decline The mar ket eased off In the late de&lraies. msd -closed heavy and below the best In all eases. Loans made today carry over until Monday, and the rise In the call loan to above 3 per cent in -the late dealings Indicated some con traction of supoires. The -approach of the month's end had Its part 4a repressing sptcu-J iauoa. The holiday In London perhaps contributed to the dullness, bat the reports -of King Ed ward's marked Improvement helped to kep prices Una. Another factor in the situation was the cessation of the demand In the ex change market -for remittance to London, owing to the holiday, which caused a decline in the price of sterling, thus lightening the threat of wlthdrawaal of gold. The Speculative In fluences In the- grain market made Inferences as to the crops somewhat obscure. The coolers were entirely neglected, end tho coalmlncrs' 1 strike was not a visible influence In the mar ket. There was some buying of the railroad Stocks that was alleged to, be fcr Investment In anticipation of the funds to be disbursed after the first of the month. There was very little doing in the hond mar- J ket, andthe movement of pricas nrcre Irregular. Total sales, par value, $3,023,000. United States 2s declined H. ind the new 4s U per cent on the last call. Closing Stoclc Quotations. S 3 P ?
