June 23. Grain bearswere caught In a trap today, and were squeezed to the good proflt or the bulls. Clearing conditions In the wheat fields, as shown by the weather map at the opening, augmented by lower ca bles. Induced liberal early liquidation and short selling of wheat. After last week's bull ish arguments on wet weather, follow by Saturday's break, the bears believed the prices were much too high for the fair, warm weath er they had In their mind for the harvests. The excitement over wheat scarcity abroad seemed to have subsided, and this gave the bears encouragement. Bulls who bad paper rroflts that were threatened hastened to take them. As a result, July opened &c to Hdhc down, at 72&73a There were a few early bullish statistics, which were lost sight of for a time, but soon the crowd perceived that the pit was oversold. Big Increases in stocks frightened the shorts, and the rest of the day the trade was busy pushing prices up, as the shorts hurried to cover. July worked up rap Idly to 7474c with apparent ease. Buying was general. There was a little dip from lop prices on profit-taking, but July closed strong, ie up, at 74M74A4c Corn was very nervous all day. Early in the day there was marked artificial strength in July options, caused by arbitrary high bids by the bull leaders without considerable pur chases. Fluctuations were erratic. Too much rain and cold weather has been a bullish fac tor In corn of late, and In some sections of the corn belt, especially In Iowa, these condi tions now prevail to some extent. In other se-tlons, however, crops are said to be In good condition. July closed lc up, at 67c Oats were strengthened by the advance in the other grains and by their own excellent cash situation. July closed, arm, c up, at 408c The leading futures ranged as follows: WHEAT. Opening. Highest. Lowest. Closing. Julr I ONLY GOULD GROUP ACTIVE 1 STOCK-MARKET DEVOID OF OTHER "' LARGE OPERATIONS. United States Steel Suffers a Loss of Xearly -a. Point Labor Troubles Have Depressing Influence.. NEW YORK, June 23. The dominating In fluence In -small professional operations was manifest In the tendency of prices of railroad stocks to react to a "previous level. The only trace of large speculative operations was In the Gould group, led by tho Wabash and Reading Issues. The Industrial department was weak, with the exception of one or two unimportant stocks, and was un3er pressure of what looked like genuine liquidation. The buying of the Wabash issues was unex plained by any news development. It came from the tsame sources as have been active for some time past In this group of stocks, and represents the effort to realize the Improve ment from the properties through recent ex tensions and new acquisitions. The news of the day Included a report of an appeal to a higher court of tho City of Pittsburg's case against the entrance Into Pittsburg by the Wabash, and an authorized statement of the project for a new railroad from "Denver to Salt Lake to connect with the proposed rail road to Los Angeles. This project Is avow edly Intended as a competitor to. the Western extensions of the Gould system. But the large buying of the various Gould stocks was not checked in any degree by this news, 8U Louis & Southwestern preferred, which has (usually tnovad In company with tho Gould stocks, was decidedly reactionary. This wis the more conspicuous In view of the rise of 67 points In Chicago & Eastern Illinois, sup posed to be set aside for absorption In the Interest of St. Louis Southwestern. Man hattan shared in the strength of the Could stocks In the early dealings, and Imparted some sympathetic strength to the other local transactions. The -polnt rise in Reading was apparently designed as an answer to the ad dress to the public by the president of the United Mlneworkers. Most of tbls galq was lost on the reaction. Among the Industrials, Colorado Fuel was a conspicuous sufferer on acocunt of the sup posed dispute amongst Insiders as to the con tinuance of dividends upon the stock. The recent heavy load of Amalgamated Copper also gave way xo positive weakness in view of the continued decline In the price of copper and the unprecedented production. Supporting orders seemed to be withdrawn In United States Sel. and that stock suffered a net loss of nearly a point. It Is the general conviction in Wall street that the proposed plan for conversion of preferred stocks Into S per cent bonds will be blocked by the court, thus leaving no offset to the Increase of fixed charges on the $50,000,000 new bond l?s.ue. L There seems to be a fear that the payment of dividends on tho common stocks u tnus threatened. The reports of minor labor troubles, whllo not directly affecting any special stocks, have a somewhat depressing effect on sentiment, and several reports of voluntary Increases In wages. Instead of having a reassuring effect, were taken as pointing to the prevailing discontent of labor with the present rate of pay. Satur day's unsatisfactory bank statement was borne In mind today, and probably helped to repress speculating. The closing was easy, at the considerable reaction In railroad stocks. A number of less active stocks show large losses. The bond market was moderately act ive and Irregular. Total sales, par value, $2,580,000. United States new 4s declined per cent on the last call.
