tffirD MOHNING OREGONTAN, TUESDAY; ;JUNE IT, 1902. 13 COMMERCIAL AND The market situation yesterday -was devoid of special features, business being of the usual Monday proportions. There was a fair amount of produce carried over from Saturday, and prices -were accordingly -weak In some lines. Potatoes opened decidedly -weak, and the, price has dropped below 75c for old stock, with new plentiful ftt ?1 501 73 per cental. Kcw Cali fornia onions have also dropped again, and are now selling at 75o?l per cental. The egg market is holding steady, despite the fact that the outside demand has been met by lib eral receipts of Eastern esgs on Puget souna. Sales are made In this market at 18S18&C, and as the Kastern eggs cost 204c laid down at Seattle, It Is apparent that there are hot enough available In this market. Strawber ries came In pretty freely yesterday, and some very god stock sold at 4c, with 3c tno t0D figure for the best that was received. Veal an J pork are weak under heavy receipts and light demand. Groceries show no change. Bnnlc Clearings. Clearings. Balances. There was a heavy decrease In worm s shipments, quantities on passage were oyer 3.000,000 bushels smaller than last week, and the American visible decreased over 2,K,UU0 bush: Is. This array gave a better tone to the Eastern market, and the local market showed Eomc signs of a sympathetic feeling. Walla Waha was quoted up to OCc, and there was nothing obtainable except small lots of Insig nificant proportions. For bluestem for milling purposes, some fancy figures have been paid. the h.ghest prices of the season being onerea for round lots. Freights are steady, but hardly firm. A small carrier was reported yesterday at 28s Od for wheat, with the option of flour at the same rate. ABLY BELOW THE BEST. Leaders In Campaign for Advance Fear Jio Money Stringency From. Settlements X?xt Month. NEW YORK. June 10. The character of to day's stock market remalnedythe same as that of last week. There were operations for a rise la a few prominent stocks, but they were not aggressively pursued, and left no Important net results. St. Paul, Missouri Pacific TJnloa Pacific, Canadian Pacific and the Atchlsona were most largely dealt In. It will be seen that none of these saved as much as a point of net gain on the day, although Canadian Paclfla rose at one time 1 over Baturday, and St. Pa.ul 15J. a number of tho minor granger stocks wero lifted at different times, and the Chicago & Northwestern stocks both made 3-polnt advances. Late in the day, after the indifference of the general market to bear leadership Was demonstrated, there was an advance In the Readings. This proved equally Inefficacious, and the market closed dull and easy, considerably below the best The movement In the Western stocks, while obviously professional, seemed based on the assumption of & favorable outcome for the corn crop and upon the argument of probable dividend Increases. Nobody assumes that the Missouri Pacific dividend this week will be changed from the 2 per cent semi-annual rate, and the heavy outlays being made by TJnlon Pacific are against tho presumption of a present Increase. But the example of the Chicago & Northwestern Increase Is an Influ ential one, and affects especially SL Paul. The buying of this group of stocks at the opening was suffltlent to carry up the price In face of rather heavy London selling. Induced by anxie ty over the Illness of tho King of England. The leaders of the campaign for the advance profess to fell assured that the July 1 settle ments will be effected without any" stringency of money. Last year, tho money market be came active about this time, and at the close of the month call money ran up to 25 per cent, and prices in the stock market collapsed. During July of last year the difference In the money market continued, and Its effect on the stock market was aggravated by the damage to the corn crop and tho steel strilce. Between July 22 and July 27 there was a contraction of over $40,000,000 In loan accounts of the banks, and it was not until tho last. of July that the banks began to expand their loans again, after large receipts of cash from the Interior and from Subtreasury disbursements. The foreign trade statement for May, Just Issued, shows a decrease In exports of upward of $22,000,000, showing that the exports of manufacturers fell somewhat below those of May last year, in addition to the heavy de crease In agricultural products. For 11 months In the fiscal year the trade balance In favor of this country Is thus reduced nearly $168. 000,000 below that for the corresponding period of last year. The Industrial department of the stock list was generally heavy. United States Steel stocks were slightly de pressed by the making permanent of the In junction against the stock conversion and bond Issue plan pending the appeal to the upper court. There was a fair demand for bonds, and prices were firm. Total sales, par value, $2,405, 000. United States 2s, coupon, declined per cent, and the old -4s advanced per cent on the last call.
