It THE MORIiNG OBE&OKIAK; MONDAT, MAT 19, 1902. COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL NEWS A slump In potatoes, steady market on wheat, advance In barley, oats, mohair and hops and wme weakness In eggs, poultry and butter were the principal features of the market Bit nation In Portland last week, and the business ended Saturday with most lines, showing a Bood, Wealthy tone. Tho local barley and oats market moved up In sympathy with higher "Prices In San Francisco. In .spite of the ex cellent crop prospect reported and the large crop of last year, the barley market In the Bay City Is firmer than It has been at any "time for the past six months. On Saturday the December option sold up to S4c per cen tal, while spot barley was quote as high as $104. per cental. As bailey stocks have been practically exhausted In this state, local quo tations have been advanced from 102 per ton, and oats are about $1 per ton higher. Potatoes toppled off early In the week and failed to get back on a steady foundation at the close Of business Saturday. Shipments have been almost too large for the San Fran- Cisco market, and as new potatoes are coming id down there the demand for old stock Is in a Measure curtailed. During the week the last lots of old heps on the west side -of the "Willamette were purchased by Phil Nels & Co., of this city, at 15c, which Is about the best price of the season. There were 183 bales In the lots mentioned, and they were held by B. Gabriel and F. M. Crabtreo, of Dayton. The market continues very firm on anything In the hop line, and offerings arc very light. Much the same condition of affairs pre vails in the East, and the New Tork Journal of Commerce, under date of May 13. Fays: Offerings of both state and Pacific hops were decidedly limited, reflecting the small stocks dealers were carrying, and the tone of the mar ket held firm. The volume of business trans acted was light, the buying br brewers being limited to an occasional small lot, and there was no trading among dealers. Mall advices were being received from up the state reporting damage to the vines by the freeze of the past few nights, but It Is not believed lha't serious damage has been done, as the roots, have not been affected. A private letter received by a Portland deal er from London says: The roots have wintered well in England, and with everything up to the present In its favor, there Is every possibility of another large crop. A feature of the trade In the commission house portion of Front street was the receipt of the first of the 1002 crop of Oregon straw berries. They came in limited quantities Mon day, and sold at $9 40 per crate, dropping two Jays later to 25c per box, and Saturday to 20c The California berries arriving Satirrday were of very good quality, but 10c per poupd was tha best figure, and by today they will prob 'Vbly bs still lower, and Oregon berries v. III be 'reasonably plentiful by the latter part of the Ss-eek. Tho wheat market held steady, with one or tWo heavy transactions for this season of the fe"ear reported. The comparatively small amount of wheat still remaining In the country Is In Khe hands of people who are financially able & carry It until the price suits them, and there Us eo much bullishness in the general situation that they are dissatisfied with present 'prices. Walla Walla can be worked for 60 CGc, but tho most of the offerings are held for 67c or better. There are no ealefl reported for "Valley for export, and the mills in the interior are paying so much more for It than lit will bring for shipment that there will be nothing xrore done for export this season. Freights snow some steadiness for spot or aearby business, but are weaker for distant tonnage- No more new crop ships were re ported. during the week, but three spot or aearby, vessels were chartered, two for the Cape of Good Hope and one for United King dom. The weather for the past week has not been unfavorable for the crop, and while the deasoq. -still -be much later than last year, with good conditions .from .now on, a satisfac tory crop will be harvested. The California crop outlook la thus reported by the San Fran cisco Commercial News: The grain crop in California has been im mensely benefited by the recent rain which fell over .nearly every part of the state. Moisture Was badly needed in the southern part Of the San Joaquin Valley, In the souths and in the southern Coast counties. In some parts of those districts the crop will be ehort, owing to the lack of rain earlier .In the season, and & good deal of the early sown Is already being cut for hay. In all other sections of the state the yield will be unusually heavy. The East ruled. fairly steady throughout last week and the weekly statistics, which are due today, are almost certain to be bullish. The market letter of Bolton de .Ruyler & Co. 'has the following comment on the situation: The weather dt the moment Is tho Import ant factor. Our advices from wha,we regard the hest source In the Northwest Indicate the probable certainty -of .an important shortage in the acreage of Spring wheat. Professional traders are, ho'wer. up to the point, rather inclined to discredit this. Southwest advices ore conflicting; wa are Inclined -to think pres ent Indications are that the "Winter wheat crop- will be 75,000,000 to 100.000,000 bushels under last year, the shrinkage mainly In tho Southwest. There Is probably a moderate In crease In farmers' deliveries In that section, but nothini: Important There will be no Liverpool market until Wednesday. Northwest stocks show large decrease, and the visible on Monday will likely do tho same. World's shipments are estimated at 0,000,000, with some Increases on passage. LONDON, May 18 The Stock Exchange was short cf cash and long on stocks throughbut the past week. The payments for the new Issue of consols -and settlement day require ments sent borrowers to tho Bank of England, while the combination of the Whitsuntide hol idays and ' the -conference of Boer leaders at Vreenlglng, Transvaal, dampened all the spec ulative enthusiasm ..and business was almost at a standstill for the wbpl week. The speech of the Colonial Secretary, Mr. Chamberlain, at Birmingham, was worked by the, bears for much more than Its real value and caused a shading Tn the quotations on con sols and other funds, but could not add ma terially to the general inaction. The settlement disclosed a decided Increase on American account, i but this principally consisted of the transferring of transactions here from New York on account of the high rates In Wall street. The quotations on home rails Improved during the, wek, but without much actual trading. Mexican rails were quite, depressed on the silver outlook. South Americans were In rather good demand. Th& shares of the China Mutual Steam Navigation Company rose on the proposal to purchase the business of the company, and this in spite of the opposition to the transfer among the directorate. Pending the results of the peace conference In South Africa, mfnes were more stamant than ever. EASTERN LIVEST-OdC. CHICAGO, May 17. Cattle Receipts, 100; steady. The bride, being very pretty, attracted the attention of a stylish-looking city gentleman, who happened to occupy the same seat with the hap'py pair. During the exhibition the part Of the hall occupied by the audience was obscured. By some accident the lights went out also on the stage. During the darkness the young man from the city pressed the hand of the bride. She was much alarmed, but offered no resistance. Then he acttlally leaned over and kissed her. This was too much, and the wife resolved to tell her husband. "John." j. ' ...at?" . Z. - "This feller's kissing me." oi - re "Well, tell him to quit" -r "No, John, you toil him."
