Baying: of Stocks; for London An other Strengthening Factor Money Situation Ejnsler. XEW TORK, May 13. Today's stock market was a dull and narrow affair' between profes sional traders for the most part, but a stronger tone was unmistakable. There was a natural Recovery from yesterday's weakness. The in fluences which weakened the market then were reviewed or alleviated today, and there was a considerable demand from the professional short "interest, which sold stocks short yester day on the unfavorable developments. The publication cf the Government's unfavorable crop conditions on May 1 Induced considerable selling by the short Interest. Pressure against shorts was exerted by rumors of a favorable turn In the anthracite strike situation, but no information on this point was forthcoming. Apparently, the liquidation forced by the more urgent discrimination by money-lenders against collateral, was accepted yesterday, and there were no such formidable breaches In the prices of high-grade stocks as on yesterday, when that feature was a strong sentimental Influence against the 'market. Some of the wide ad vances scored today Jn fact simply represented sudden recoveries or partial recoveries from yesterday's severe declines. The money situation was somewhat easier to day, although loans were made again at as high as 8 per cent. Buying of stocks for Lon don account was a strengthening factor in tho market. -The lower rate for money still ruling abroad makes It profitable for domestic buyers of-Amerlcan stocks to purchase them In Lon don, and hold them with money borrowed there. Testerdays sharp relapses In some stocks awakened skepticism as to many recent rumors of the source of the recent demand for stocks, said to be for control by large Interests, but the Louisville & Nashville episode, and the known character Of some of the recent distribu tion of Reading among other railroad interests keeps alive the conviction that there is a ten dency towards the lodgment of stocks In strong hands for control. The state of suspension of the Northern Securities case clearly does not prevent the progress bf plans for control, as the question Involved therein Is one of method In holding stocks after they have been secured. A rumor circulated today, although emphatical ly denied, that the Northern Securities In terests intended, to abandon their present plan resulted in a drop in the stock on the curb to 99, which is Us first fall below parity. The stock market closed dull and firm. The bond market was dull and somewhat u regular. Total sales, par value, $2,310,000. United States 2s and 3s declined U. Americans continue stoutly to resist the Influence of New York's high money rates, bad Crop reports and the coal strike. To the markets this Is a sur prlaeibut the buying Is not local: it Is simply a continuance of Kew York's policy of trans ferring speculative commitments "here because of the cheapness In carrying stocks. The rest was a repetition of yesterday. It opened hard and then improved. New York sold at tlrsf and then turned buyer, with tho result that prices closed at the top. Brad street's reported the world's visible supply desreased by 2.734.000 bushels, and contract stocks were reported rapidly falling off.
