THE MORNING OBEGONIAN, SATURDAY, APRIL 5, 1902.. . 13 COMMERCIAL AND The weather yesterday forenoon was too fine to admit of very heavy produce receipts, and the wagon receipts of potatoes were the small est they have been for a long time. A con- I mm.m.?. tau ncaiuu iur itinu Hum wvu probably result in much htgher prices, as the etock has been kept pretty closely shipped up, and thus far the Ean Francisco market has taken up all of the offerings at good prices. Yesterday buyers were quoting $1 25 for best Burbanks, but Intimated that another day or two of fine weather would Increase the price a few cents. While there was no open cut In the price of butter yesterday, more of It was sold at less than 25c than, was sold at the top quotation. Lower prices seem almost certain, as stocks are accumulating quite rapidly. The egg market Is still very soft, and Bales are made as low as 13c. with very few selling above that figure, although some dealers' are etlll holding out for 1314c and 14c In single-case lots. The wheat market In the East Is still settling to a lower level of prices, and the close yes terday was pretty well down to the lowest fig ure of the season. In the local market, the fame lifelessness that has characterized the market for the past month Is still In evidence. It is Impossible for exporters to buy wheat on an export basis, as their demands are not suffi ciently pressing to warrant the payment of more than export values, they are for the pres ent out of the market. One factor which tends to make matters easy In this port Is the dull flour trade In the Orient. From present indi cations, tho shipments for the remainder of the season will show a sharp falling off compared with those for the -season to date. This will leave somewhat larger supplies for export than had been figured on. hut as yet these supplies are not coming out. Speculation 'Was Spirited In a Num ber of Securities. NEW7 TORK, April 4. Today's stock-market gave unmistakable evidence of a substantial recruiting of the speculative element. Tho day's operations, were on a far larger scale than anything in tho recent history of the stock market. The dealings in St. Paul and "Union Pacific were vividly reminiscent of the days of the boom of last year. If the dealings In these stocks are added to those In Louisville & Nashville and in Southern Pacific, it will be found that considerably more than one-third of the day's aggregate transactions are accounted for. It was not until late in the day that much -flNANClAL NEWS Impression was made on the other stocks. Such stocks as New Tork Central and Pennsylvania were then brought forward with spasmodic ad vances. In the final hour selling to take profits made heavy Inroads upon prices and reduced all of the principal gains to fractional limits. The market closed dull, but steady. There was no news to account for the sudden demand for the stocks, although rumors were plenty point ing to a fresh readjustment of control In the transcontinental railroad systems. Rather the movement seemed based upon an assumption that the time of doubt and uncertainty over the outcome of the .year was practically pasty with the largest. requirements upon the money market supposedto be met, and with the crops assured of a good condition, after the Winter to start the season. To account for any Euch total of sales as those recorded in the principal active stocks today, allowance must be made for tho sale and re-sale many times of Identical holdings. The general reaction at the end of the day also points to the tentative character of the specu lation. There was very active realising among the specialties recently advanced, conspicuously Sugar and Colorado Fuel. Neither was there lacking the wide qdvanccs In obscure special ties which have recently characterized tho market. There was no change In the situation of tho money market. The firmness of sterling ex change and the further decline In the Paris rate of sterling point to gold exports next week. The local money market was quiet, however. There was an active demand for bonds, for which there was a good open market all day. Total sales. $5,280,000. United States bonds were all unchanged on the last call.
