THE MOBNINQ OBEGONIAN. WEDNESDAY, MAKCH 26,' 1902. 13 COMMERCIAL AND The last steamer sailing from Portland left 5000 sacks of potatoes on the dock, and as receipts have been quite heavy for the past two days, buyers are again showing signs of uneasiness over prices, fearing a break In the Ban Francisco market. Their fear, how ever, has not yet developed sufficiently to pre vent them from offering $1 30 per cental for best stock, and a considerable quantity was purchased yesterday at that figure. After a long period of decided strength, the butter market Is at last becoming shaky, and while no cufln prices has been made. It Is expected very soon, as receipts are Increasing at a lively rate. Eggs were selling at various prices yesterday. Some round lots were re ported as changing hands at 13 cents. Others sold single cases as low as 14 and H, and some sales were reported at 15 cents. Ab there were plenty of eggs obtainable at 14 cents, last evening, the market can hardly be termed strong at anything above that figure. Veal and pork were a little easier yesterday, under heavy receipts. Groceries unchanged. Bank Clearings. Exchanges. Balances. The wheat mafttet In Portland remains In a state of stagnation such as Is seldom notice able except In midsummer. It Is practically Impossible to buy any wheat on an export basis, and rather than pay the fancy prices demanded, exporters are holding off awaiting developments. The Eastern markets held steady yebterday, with no change of consequence In prices. The wheat In the Pacific Northwest Is pretty well out of first hands, and the tcxr sales that have been made for the past week have been mostly on milling account. There Is no change in the freight situation, and no spot tonnage was offering yesterday. There seems to be a disposition In certain quarters to bid up on new crop tonnage, but as yet nothing has been done this month In excess of 288 Od, although 20s 3d was bid and refused for a large carrier yesterday. Ships in port are receiving fair dispatch, and by the middle of April there will be but few remaining In the river to load. Spot stocks of wheat are not large, but with the amount purchased will be sufficient to meet all tonnage engagements. Wheat Nominal; Walla Walla. 0465c. blucstem, 6583c; Valley. 64C5c. NEW YORK STOCK MARKET. Dealings Reflect Expectations of Tlinrnday-to-Monday Holiday. NEW YORK. March 25. Today's stock market began, to reflect the expectation of the coming triple holiday from Thursday un til the Monday after Easter.. So long an in terval of no trading always .prompts soma closing out of accounts. There is an addi FINANCIAL NEWS tional incentive that the narrow resources of the loan market may lead to a flurry in rates when the "demand develops for loans to carry over from Thursday until Monday. There were no immediate developments of Importance in today's money market, but a number of Important requirements are to be met the first of the month and the beginning of the comr lng quarter. These requirements are known to be so considerable, owing to the projects of syndicates, that the available credits of the banks; . within the legal requirements of 25 per cent cash reserves, would be more than wiped out In meeting them. An extensive shifting of loans obviously will bo necessary to meet the situation. Bankers express con fidence that the steadiness of the money market will not be disturbed, but -speculators on margin with borrowed money know, from costly experience, that this docs not neces sarily mean that their call loan accommo dations will be undisturbed If there la a pinch. There was & revival of apprehension this morning of further troubles in tho anthracite coal region, which seems to be Justified In view of the contingent order of tho conven tion being committed for a strike unless cer tain demands are compiled with. Reassur ances on the part of those connected with the coal Interests that no strike was anticipated were not wholly effective, and there waa some nctlve liquidation, especially In the Readings. Tho Issuance of Injunctions against Western railroads forbidding rebates and rate-cutting was not unexpecttd, but the reported determi nation of the Intcr-siatc Commerce Commission to hold a further and more stringent Inquiry Into the rate question was a surprise and had a cooling influence. Preparations for further suits In state courts against the North ern Securities Company are to be reckoned with. The testimony of the principals In the great contest for control of Northwestern railroads, which, taken as It Is In a legal contest, is being read with great attention In Wall street and not with altogether reassur ing effect on sentiment. There waa a slump of more than seven points in Evansville and Terre Haute. The advance was renewed in Colorado Fuel, and after some heaviness the stock gained 3U. allowing for the dividend off. North American made a further upward dash, and late in the day the Kansas City and Southwestern stocks and the .Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sault Ste. Marie stocks forged upward without explanation. . Amalgamated Copper was supported in face of the postpone ment of the Anaconda dividend meeting and closed with a small gain. There was heavy selling of the Wabash de benture B bonds, with a loss of 1 per cent Otherwise bonds were irregular. Total sales, par value, $2,350,000. United States' bonds were all unchanged on the last call. Cloning; Stock Quotations. DESCRIPTION.
