f !THB MORNING OBEQONIAfr, FRIDAY, SURCBl 7, 190 11 COMMERCIAL AND Another drop In sugar was the most Im portant feature in the local market situation jesterdoy, 15 cents being sliced off the al ready reasonable figures, with the end not ret in sight. The decline does not Beem to be harming anyone In this market to any appreciable extent, as neither wholesaler nor retailers have very much confidence In a. rpeedy return of higher prices and are hold ing stocks down to very moderate propor tions. There were no other changes In gro ceries yesterday, and most of the dealers re ported a good trade. Potatoes continue steady, and some dealers have received orders for shipping into Arizona, a field from which they have previously been shut out by the competition of Colorado potatoes. Shipments by the next steamer will be quite moderate, and a further Improvement In the San Fron cIbco market la expected to follow. The egg market, after the decided weakness of Tues day and Wednesday, had steadied up a little yesterday, but 14 cents was an extreme fig ure and they were retailing all over the city at 15 cents per dozen. In round lots, sales were made at 13c, and 13c, and several hundred cases were shipped out of the city at 13 cents net. Poultry market Is still firm for good chickens, but only fairly steady in other linos. Bank Clearing. Exchanges. Balances. Portland ?5T.4.773 $110,927 Seattle 452. There was a fractional gain in the wheat markets In the East yesterday, but in the local market, matters were at a standstill. Buyers were quoting about C5 cents for Walla "Walla, with a very limited amount of busi ness possible, at about half a cent to a cent above this figure. Enough ships have missed their cancelling dates within- the past month to leave the exporters In this city in a very independent position regarding wheat, and when the exporters cannot pick it up at about an export value, they stay out of the mar ket. The milling demand Is fairly good, but as tho Oriental flour trade will not readily stand the recent advances made necessary by the advance In wheat, this trade is of smaller proportions than It was a few weeks ago. Receipts of wheat have been qulto large with in the past few days, but it is nearly all on old account, the greater part of it coming out of Snake River, where it was held up first by low water, and afterwards by Ice in tho river. Freights remain steady but inactive, with 25 shillings bid, and 2Gs 3d asked. No new transactions aro reported, nor is there liable to be any until there is some improve ment in the foreign market. Today's stock mar ket made a. remarkable exhibit of strength in spots. Several of the customary market lead ers were included in the upward movement. The strength of the market, nevertheless, failed to carry conviction as to the genuineness of tho demand which lifted prices to a higher level. As the advance gained headway, var ious outstanding short Interests were put under pressure, and bought rather urgently to cover short contracts. The demand was, so far, un questionably genuine. Otherwise, there was the appearance of manipulation. This was partly due to the character of the stocks which advanced most consplcuously-stocks which are often not heard of for weeks at a time on the exchange. Nor was there any tangible news today to account for their strength, either affecting them Individually or the gen eral situation. In fact, tho conditions which have made the basis qf the bear argument early in tho week continued In force today. The great snow storm, with the new obstruc tion to traffic, threatened Inroads upon future showings of earnings. The engagements of gold for export Saturday were Increased to dax to $3,300,000, with the possibility of fur ther engagements tomorrow still open. Reports of friction over freight rates in the Southwest, and of the dissolution of freight associations, on account of threatened action by the Government, continued to be heard. These would all have induced selling of stocks in the speculative temper which prevailed earlier in tho week. They were Ignored to day. A very strong sentimental effect was produced by the persistent .show of strength in Chicago & Northwestern, and the charac ter of the buying, which lifted It. and which had every appearance of genuine investment demand. It was this this movement which directly encouraged the heavy buying of St. Paul, and which leavened the whole market in the course of tho day. It was supplemented by similar movements in other high-grade closely-held stocks, such "as Pullman, which roso an extreme 10 points; Chicago. St. Paul, Minneapolis & Omaha. 7. and a number of less conspicuous examples. Northwestern it self touched 233. During the existence of a C1lr the 8tock years as0 lt touched 230, -.... ,o prerious reoord. Pullman. General Electric. Omaha & Chicago and East ern Illinois also made record prices today. Another notable movement was in Colorado Fuel, which gained 10 points on a -rery active demand and a very feverish movement. This movement Is supposed to be directly related to that In Colorado & Southern, which was inclined to rest today, although the tecond pre- TM advanced three points. Outside of these, the most notable movements of the day were in a varied assortment of low-grade obscure stocks. The movement ultimately ex iS? h0WeVer to some of the soft coalers, Jed by Pennsylvania and other prominent stocks. The late dealings showed the usual proflt-taklnc and tv Mnoin.- ... 1 Rates for call loans continued at the higher level established during the week. The Iron Age to day will say: The floods and storms have been Interfering again with both production and consumption at & time when any delay lt seriously annoy ing. They threaten to prolong the shortage of material beyond the Spring months, and are making more and more difficult the endeavors of important Interests to accumulate the fin ished goods, in anticipation of the usual Spring trade. The anxiety with reference to the supply of foundry Iron, for the second half of. the year, is subsiding somewhat, and some of the sellers have been placing comparatively little Downing, Hopkins &Co, - . Established 1893. WHEAT AND STOCK BROKERS Room 4, Ground Floor Chamber of Commerce iron, after the tremendous ' February rush. Others, however, have booked some large or ders. Of course, lt is probable, that this year's consumption will be considerably larger than that of 1900 and 1901, but the tact remains that there is still & reserve in sight larger than the majority of tho trade suspect. As for the scarcity of structural material, the point is made that It Is more apparent than real! Formerly the bridge and structural shops drew upon many mills for their supply, and by distributing their orders were able to arrange' for simultaneous deliveries of the dif ferent sizes. Since the consolidation, lt has not been quito so readily arranged, and lt has often happened -that work could not be com pleted because 10 per cent, or less, of the matter, in the shape of particular sizes or sections, was not ready for delivery. No further Importations of any consequence are reported, either in pig iron, billets or fin ished material. EASTERN LIVESTOCK. CHICAGO, March 0. Cattle Receipts. 6500. steady.
