r-fRs 13 THE MORNING OREGONIAN, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY, 22, 1902. J COMMERCIAL AND Fine weather yesterday failed to Increase the volume of trade la the wholesale markets, and ' l.o business It beginning to wear an end-of- the-rnonth cast. The farmers In the near-by r-rvclncts were all too busy with farm work 3esterday to come to tho city, and receipts of produce by wagon were very small. Growers did not lake kindly to the recent decline In potatoes, and some of them have faith enough In the market to refuse to Edl until there Is another advance in prices. The egg market yesterday yielded to the pressure of heavy re ceipt", and weakened to 22c and 22lic, with xAellont prof pects for a further drop to 20c if yesterday's weather holds on a few days long er Thre Is a pretty firm market on oats, and holders will not accept the rates which are offered, apparently hoping to do better later In the season. Barley Is also firm, but If It follows the San Francisco market, will be weaker soon, as there has been quite a slump In that markvt jdnee the weather conditions beramc more favorable. There Is again some uneasiness In the Jugar market, but no change. Other groceries are quiet, but steady, with a fair trade re;orted. Unnlc Clenrlng.i. The approach of a protracted holiday In the Eastern markets gave Chicago an easier tone jestenlav. but the Northwestern farmers failed to follow Chicago, as they usually do. and "were ltoldlng their stocks about as firm as -vcr. Some sales were reported at Clc for Valla Walla, while others declared their In ability to buy anything at less than C3ljc per b-.ibhel. T5ven the latter figure will not move ou much wheat, and It will require a pretty stiff advance in other markets to Infuse mucn life Into the local market, and unless this ad vance comes the market will go into its usual Summer state of torpitude much earlier than usual. Sentiment Overcomes Shock Doc to Move AKint Mcrsrer. NEW YORK. Feb. 21. The action of the stock market this morning demonstrated pretty conclusively that speculative sentiment had overcome the shock caused by yesterday's un expected announcement of tho proceedings against the Northern Securities Company. Stocks held on -margin and by timid holders had apparently been sold out yesterday, and with the forced liquidation completed, there FINANCIAL NEWS -was little need for supporting orders In market this morning. It was generall tho morning. It was generall sup posed that stocks bought yesterday for support had been unloaded on the rally, as insiders gained confidence that no serious break in prices was Impending. At the opening the market was very heavy, but by the second hour the selling had fallen to such small pro portions that the market was practically slag imnt. At the same time, there were points of resistance, and a few stocks gained additional strength as the day progressed, and led a sub stantial rally, which placed rrlces quite gen erally above last night's close. The Issuance of the bank statement seemed to be the turning point. The cash Item was practically unchanged. Instead of the expected decrease of over $1,000,000. and the restriction of the loan expansion to less than $5,000,000 reassured the uneasy sentiment that credit re sources were being taken up at too headlong a pace. The call money rato cased oft to 2 per cent under the showing of the bank state ment and the reduced requirements for specu lative purposes. The cessation of forced liqui dation and the development of strength in a number of stocks drove the shorts to cover. A report that J. P. Morgan had gone to Washington to confer with President Roosevelt gave room traders comfort. The Colorado & Southern stocks became very strong at the Inst on a volume of dealings unprecedented for those Etocks. Their gains reached 3 points or better. Good dividend prospects were alleged as the reason for the advance. Chicago. In dianapolis & Louisi-llic also roe 3l.s. and the preferred 1-1 on reported dividend prospects. Amalgamated Copper was erratic, rising at one time over a point, but closing practically unchanged. Manhattan also failed to hold Its full gain of l'fc. American Snull rose 5 and the preferred 3. Northwest recovered 45i of yesterday's loss. United States Rubber stocks were strong. Outside of these, the striking gains were In less prominent stocks. Renewed strength in the exchange market corroborated the expectation that more gold will be exported next week. Bonds were rather dull. Total sales, par value. $2,385,000. Wheat conditions were little changed. Foreign news was slightly bullish, and domestic the reverse. Clolng-up deals started the market a trifle lower, but so tame was speculation that fluctuations the last part of the session were hardly noticeable. There was little interest In the market, and the pit was without a feature. The prevailing sentiment was to sell for a moderate break, but the experience of short sellers In both corn and wheat for tho last few days held the feeling In check to some extent. Eventually, the Southwestern markets began turning weak. The corn market was affected boarishly. and wheat turned the scale, and clipped downward. When the bVarish feeling was well manifested In wheat, bulls had a pretty hard time of It supporting the market. May, which opened a shade higher, to '.if?Uc lower, nt 7S'4fi7Sc, hag gled for a long time, then declined to 77?c and closed weak, "ic lower, at 77Vain4c. There was more Interest today In corn. Bear ish news was In the majority, and sentiment was nearly all on the selling side. Corn fought declines stubbornly, however, in a way to puzzle the trade.
