v TV. , . iCf r - ' - "a- THE MORNING OREGOXIAN. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY, 1, 1902. ii-- i INSANITY DEFENSE OF THIEF JntlRe Sentenced Him to Five Ycnrit Iji the Penitentiary. VANCOUVER, Wash.. Jan. 31. John Ramsay, who was arrested January 13 for burglary, pleaded guilty before Judge Miller, in the Superior Court, today, and -was sentenced to serve five years in the State Penitentiary. Ramsay stole two overcoats from the office of Doctors Hixon and Stowcll, January 14. He took the stolen articles to Portland, where he was apprehended and brought back for trial. Ramsay, by representing himself to be a mining expert, succeeded in vic timizing several business men here pre ious to his arrest. He created quite a sensation in court today by pleading his own case. His -plea for clemency would have done credit to a trained lawyer. He alleged that he met with an accident In the Kootenay country some time ago, which injured his skull and affected his brain so that he was subject to fits of temporary insanity, and while in that condition he committed the offense charged. This, he said, is his first crim inal offerjpe. , W. C. T. U. Institute. A two-days' Woman's Christian Tem perance Union institute was begun at the Presbyterian Church in this city today. The Institute is conducted by Mrs. Mar garet B. Piatt and Mrs. Margaret C. Munns. State President and Correspond ing Secretary, respectively, of the organi zation.
