THE MOBNING OREGONIAN, TUESDAY, JANUARY 31, 1901. 11 COMMERCIAL AND "With the Christmas festivities at an end, and the old year about played out, there was not much of Interest in the commercial situation yesterday. The fortunate shippers who sent In turkejs profited by the business, for there were not enough of these birds on the street to fill the New Year's demand, and prices were marked up In some cases as high as 18c per I ound, although most of the stock was sold a shade lower. Chickens profited by the strength In turkeys, and were substantially higher all round. California butter was on the street in gtnr-rous quantities, and Is selling enough cheaper than the Oregon product to prevent any further advances In the latter. The grocery markets wore inactive yesterday, with no changes In prices. Wheat was erratic, with no sales reported In the local market. Oats and barley are very strong, and tending higher. Liverpool went off with a crakh, and even a strong close in the East did not induce local buyers to bid up to Saturday's prices. Some dealers quoted GlftiHsC, and the country was apparently awaiting a reaction in its favor, for no overtures toward business were forthcoming. Sixty-two cents was freely bid on Saturday, and the Influence of that rrice will need to wear off before there will be much business done. The freight situation remains, easy, and the two disengaged ships i.Jw in the ri'er are unable to do anything at th i at ec asked by owners. There are 21 s-Vs in th river to finish loading, and cx . .. rs will not take up any new business until the r resent fleet is out of the way or the mar l.tt improves. Scarcity of Money Run Up Call Lonn Rate and Curtnllfi Bnalncax. NEW YORK, Dec 30. Today's market was largely a matter of money supplies. The symptoms wore Indubitable that these were Ecarce, the call loan rate running up at one time to 12 per cent. The general rate for re newals was 10 per cent. There were a number cf other depressing factors whip! reinforced this motive for selllnyTtockSi. Tii J the conse quence p-ns jj-etnTal declining tendency of ppu-e string the morning. Later in the day, the 'jrioney rate became easier under offerings by bankers, among whom J. P. Morgan & Co. were conspicuous. A very urgent demand de veloped for Reading, which caused an advance of 4 points In that stock at a nqw high record price at each step of the advance. The dlmen- FINANCIAL NEWS slons o? the trading in the stock were such as to show that only the largest Interests could conduct It. The Individual blocks taken ran all the way from 1000 to 16.000 shares. The general mar ket steadied under the Influence of this move ment, but was singularly unresponsive, even in those stocks most nearly allied In interest to Beading, with the exception of New Jersey Central, which made an advance of 5 on light trading. While Reading yielded to real izing, the general market, which had been held steady, gave way again suddenly and dropped to the lowest, the industrials and Pacifies lead ing. The closing was active and easy. Many rumors were circulated to account for the strength of Reading. It was said that a stock readjustment was at hand. Another report was that Pennsylvania was buying for control. The failure of confirmation of rumors caused & suspicion among professional traders that the powerful demonstration in the stock was de signed for- sentimental effect on the general market to help support prices. In accordance with the efforts supposed to be making to that end by great banking Interests. The urgent demand for money disappointed expectations aroused by the unexpected In crease shown In banking reserves by the bank statement on Saturday, and the large gain by the banks indicated by today's return of Sub treasury operations, resulting from the payment on Saturday for the redemption of a block of $2,500,000 of Government bonds. Today over $300,000 additional was paid out for redemption of Government bonds. Later In the day. It was explained that payments were being made for $75,000,000 of Northern Pacific convertible bonds, the proceeds of which are to be used for the retirement of Northern Pacific preferred fctock. It was said that one check of $34,000,000 had passed on account of the subscriptions. It has been claimed hitherto that this operation would be accomplished by transfer of banking credits and without affecting the money mar ket. The flurry In money caused some fresh uneasiness as to possibly delay In the period of relaxation after January 1. The reduction in the Calumet & Hecla divi dend, and the closing down of the Anaconda mine depressed Amalgamated Copper sharply. Sugar was under renewed pressure, and showed the lack of recent demand from a short In terest. The assembling of Northwestern Gov ernors to consider mensures of opposition to the Northern Securities Company made the Ta clflcs weak. Union Pacific seemed to be affect ed also by some disappointment over the mea gerness of details In the annual report regard ing the methods of financing the Northern Pa cific settlement. Procedlngs begun in Ohio under the anti-trust law resulted In sharp de clines In Ohio soft-coal roads. The contro versy between Germany and Venezuela had some effect In foreign markets, but seemed to be Ignored .here. The bond market was moderately active and Irregular. Total sales, $2,320,000. Chlcnjro Grain and Provisions. CHICAGO. Dec 30. Wheat had a very weak opening. Cables were lower, much more so than was expected In consideration of the de cline here Saturday. The quantity of- wheat on passage was Increased 232,000 bushels, and the Northwestern and primary receipts were materially larger than a year ago. The one redeeming feature for the bulls was the small ness of the world's shipments to Europe. May opened quiet to 14c lower, at Sl'sC to S0c and at once sold to S0?sff80c The early sell ing was heavy, and everything offered at the low prices was absorbed. When the small de crease was reported In the visible supply and the export clearances appeared of considerable proportions, shorts began to cover In such a manner that t seemed apparent that the mar ket had been oversold. There was also some rumor that a conxldcrable short lino was being covered for F. H. Peavey. the elevator mag nate, who died here today. This covering, which began only half an hour before tho close, soon sent May to S24c Small profit-taking brought a slight reaction, and May closed strong, c up, at 82VaC Corn played a following game with wheat most of the day.
