Sew American Cardinals.
NEW YORK. Dec. 12. A dispatch from
Rome to the Tribune says:
To maintain the decision of the pope not
to create any new cardinals in America
while Cardinal Gibbons lives, and satisfy
at the same time the urgent solicitations
which some have even attributed to Pres
ident Roosevelt, it lias been suggested to
create Archbishop Ireland a cardinal, to
reside in Rome, and to make Archbishop
Corrlgan a cardinal, reserved "in pectore"
for announcement after the death of Car
dinal Gibbons. It is reported that Dr.
Earloir,, auxiliary, bishop of. New York
Is now here pushing this plan.
