BOOM IN HORSERACING PLAAS TO REVIVE TURF MEETS IN THE NORTHWEST. M. D. "Wisdom Predicts a Lively Cir cuit Next Season Irviusrton Trnclc Leased. There will be some good horseraclng throughout the Pacific Northwest next season, if present indications count for anything. The Pacific Northwest Racing Association is scheduled to meet In Se attle about January 1, and' the programme for the coming season will then be ar ranged. Heretofore there have been many conflicts in the race and fair schedules, and racehorse men have been compelled to travel back and forth, retracing their steps several times in order to attend all the meets. It is understood that the new schedule will put matters to rights, and that the racehorse men will be able to make the entire circuit in one continuous trip, thus avoiding many unnecessary de lays' and expenses. The leasing of the Irvlngton track by two well-known horsebreeders has awak ened local Interest In the sport, and it is quite likely that Portland will see some fast horses on the turf next year. M. D. "Wisdom, secretary of the State Board of Agriculture, is quite enthusiastic over racing prospects, and predicts some fast performances. Speaking of the situa tion yesterday, Mr. Wisdom said: "The Pacific Northwest Is going to see a fine lot .of races next Summer. The as sociation will make out a schedule that will be a very convenient one, and the horsemen will not have to retrace their steps, as they have done heretofore. The whole circuit will be a first-class one, as the successful race meets that were held In this part of the country last season will draw many fast horses from Califor nia and other neighboring .states. I do not know what dates v. Ill be assigned to Portland, but I am sure the local meets will he successful In every way, for they win be a part of the general circuit, and there will be plenty of fast horses and good, clean sports. Mr. Simpson and Mr. Bellman, fhe-gentlemen-who have leased the Irvlngton track, are prominent horse breeders, and are good, square men. You may depend upon it, there will be no 'crooked work at the Irvlngton track with these men In charge. The trouble with the Irvlngton races heretofore lay in the fact that they had no substantial foundation on which to stand. If they become a part of the circuit, that will In sure their success. "The races at the state fair were very successful,, and we Intend to boom the proposition right ahead for next year. We are going to put up a 52000 stake for a 2:U pace". This will be the largest purse ever .offered on the Pacific Coast, and olight to be a great drawing card in itself. These big purses are not such expensive luxuries as mpst people imagine, for there are always plenty of entrance fees for them-, -while .our small purses go begging We have 60" entries for the 2-year-old colt stake nexfc year, and the contest will be a lively one. On the whole, the prospects for a successful racing season In 1902 are bright." - A CHANCE TO BUY HOLIDAY PRESENTS. The Retail Liquor Dealers Union elect ed the following officers, at its regular meeting yesterday, for the ensuing year: President, Louis Dammasch; vice-president, Theodore Trautmann; secretary. H. Members of the union nave made for mal complaints to the officers of the or ganization in regard to what they con sider partiality and favoritism on the part of the city authorities in closing some gambling resorts and permitting others to run, notably Blazler's on First street, where It is alleged many cus tomers of other saloons are beaten out of their money. One member, who keeps a boarding-house In connection with his saloon, said many of his boarders, who are mostly worklngmen, and dependent on their weekly wages, were in the habit of gambling at these open resorts and losing their money they should have paid for board. President Dammasch, In speaking on the matter, after the meeting, said: "I shall soon appoint a board of three trustees, whose duty will be to wait on the Mayor and Chief of Police and lay these complaints before them. Miss Wilson wore a dazzling black sUk gown, and her hat had a coquettish feather dangling from it, to .give empha sis ,to her remarks. Bloengren, who is a serious looking man, with, a chin beard, testified that he left the book with the woman on the understanding that she was to buy It, and when he afterward asked her for the money, she Insulted him and declined to pay. "She used bad language," insisted Mr. Bloengren. "Oh," said Miss Wilson, "That man bwore at me," pointing to Bloengren. Then Deputy City Attorney Davis took a hand. "Did you use bad language to ward this woman?" demanded Mr. Davis. "No, sir," answered Bloengren, "I have not sworn since I was 20 years old, and I'm over 50 now."
