WILLIAM FRAZIER, Sheriff of Multnomah County. October 2S, 1901.- CHARLES F. CHARLES. His Experience in an Attempted Cal ifornia ExpreHs Robbery. San Francisco papers made sorry work of the Lane County train robbery. Their story had it that two masked men leaped on the train, clambered over the coal in the tender and held up the engineer, com pelling him immediately to cut off the ex press and mail cars and pull them down the track. The facts are that ono robber did the work, and the mall car was not cut from the rest of the train until after the unsuccessful attempt on the express car. San Francisco correspondents should remember when' writing these specials that it Is somewhat funny to make train robbers climb over coal In the tender of a locomotive, just stopping to wood up. The Examiner has the following about Charles F. Charles, the nervy express messenger who resisted the attempt of the robber or robbers of his car: "Charles R. Charles, the hero of the hold-up, is well known In this city, where he resided with his family until about eight months ago, when they moved to Portland. He comes of stock noted for bravery. His grandfather in the early 60s was Sheriff of Yuba County, where the times and conditions of society de manded men of nerve and capability. He had the reputation of being one of the bravest and best Sheriffs of those days. His father was a stock broker in this city, where he died about 20 years ago. "Charles, who is now about 33 years of age, is tall and slim and of dark complex Ion. He entered Wells, Fargo & Co. in 1S85 and worked on the Southwestern and Western divisions. He was a helper on the Los Angeles division, working with Messenger W. W. Reld. and was with him when the Dalton gang held up the train at Ceres on the night of September 3, 1S91. On that occasion, as well as on others. Charles showed unquestioned brav ery. He was appointed a full messenger on the same route and was subsequently transferred to- the Western division on the run from Dunsmuir and Portland, where he now is. "It was in the hold-up at Ceres that Charles showed the stuff of which he was made and endeared him to the officers and his fellow-employes of the express com pany. On the 3d of September, 1891, about 9 o'clock, when the train bound for San Francisco pulled out of Ceres, a small station between Modesto and Mter ced, two masked men climbed over the tender and covered the engineer and fire man with pistols. They ordered the fire man to uncouple the cars. in front of the passenger coaches and made the engineer take the train half a mile up the track. Len Harris, a Southern Pacific detective, who was on the train, "went forward to ascertain the cause of the stoppage and received two bullets in the head. "The robbers made the engineer and fireman walk back to the express car and tell the messenger to open the door. Inside were Messenger Reld and Helper Charles. Engineer Neff went to the door of the car and told them that the robbers promised that if they opened the door they would not be harmed. Those inside did not open the door and the robbers .placed a dynamite bomb at the door and exploded it. This made a hole and the fireman was ordered to go in and light a lamp. He did as he was told. The shoot ing of Harris took place at that time and the robbers left the scene. "ChaTles, Ayhen he reported the affair to the officers In thlsclty, stated that when Engineer Neff asked them to open the door, explaining the compulsion under which he was acting. Reld and Charles sat down In the floor of the car so as to keep their heads out of range from shots through the windows. Express packages were between the door of the car and the men and they prepared for a battle If necessary. Then the door was broken by a dynamite cartridge and they heard the robbers call to them to come out. prom ising they would not hurt them if they did so without resistance. Reid and Charles kept their positions and then the firing was resumed outside the car and the robbers fled."
