THE MORNING OREGONIAN, THURSDAY, , OCTOBER 10, 1901. 11 COMMERCIAL AND Wheat, potatoes and poultry were all -weaker in the market yesterday, and hops -were & little stronger, with some sales reported at 10 cents. Produce receipts -srerelarge, and the demand tras only fair. In spite of the al leged shortage of potatoes in other parts of the country, offerings are so large In this market that prices are -weak, and it requires fancy stock to command more than $1 per sack. Poultry is dragging, with chickens ac cumulating, and tut little demand for them. A carload of Eastern eggs Is due this morn ing, and the egg market Is weaker accord ingly, although sales are still made around 3a cents per doren. Oats and barley are steady hut Inactive. The grocery market was unchanged, but the retailers are buying very sparingly of sugar, in anticipation of another drop. Clearing-House Statement. Exchanges. Balances. "Walla "Halla was still quoted at 52 cents, with the usual reports that 53 cents Vas paid In the interior. A near-by ship was re ported rixcd at 30s 3d, which is a shade lowc than any rate that has yet been paid lor a sailer. XEW YORK STOCK MARKET. Variation of Sentiment, "Wltli Specu n lation Listless and Apathetic. NEW YORK, Oct. 9. The same doubt and hesitation regarding the future course of prices was reflected in today's stock market as In yesterday's. Speculation was listless and apathetic and the sentiment of the small trad ers, whose operations made up the' market, underwent many variations. Few active stocks show a net change of as much as a point, even "nhere the day's range was considerable. The disposition was to close up contracts both on the long and short side until the future course of prices outlines Itself more definitely. This tendency was demonstrated In the response of Brooklyn Transit and of Atchison to the spe cific developments affecting them. The annual report of Brooklyn Transit which was "pub lished after the close of the market last night was Interpreted unfavorably in all the current comment, especially in the disclosure that the treasury bonds bad been sold during the year. Yet the stock promptly advanced and resisted an attempt on the part of the professional traders to depress the price. The stock ad vanced at one time 2, showing the most conspicuous strength in the market. The increase In "the Atchison dividend rate, although confidently predicted in some quar ters, had been denied with equal confidence in others. In fact, the decision seems to have been discussed and finally decided In the meeting itstlf of the directors. The attempt FINANCIAL NEWS to advance the stock on the announcement proved abortive, the extreme rise over last night reaching less than a point. The doubt over the predicted advance was due to the fact of the shortage in the corn crop. Some of the" other Southwestern railroads were of fered down sharply, as though to emphasize this view. The estimate of the year's wheat crop by an agricultural periodical, placing at a record figure at 100,000,000 bushels for Kan sas alone, was an opportune offset to this contention. The election of an additional Standard Oil representative to the Union Paclnc board of directors was a verification of another bull prediction. But the bull party hesitated to take up the speculation for an advance, owing to the danger that money flurries may still Intervene before the Interior movement of cur rency terminates. Sterling exchange was nota bly strong today on an active dcmajid, de mand sterling fairly touching $4 SO. This is more than a. cent in the pound sterling above the gold Import point. Sugar and Amalga mated Copper, which continued active, drifted rather uncertainly, but with a firm under tone. Norfolk & Western was bid up nearly 2 points at one time on the assumption that recent accumulation of the stock has been for account of Pennsylvania Ballroad Inter ests. The market closed Irregular. There was a sharp breah. In Wabash deben ture B bonds. The market otherwise was rather dull and Irregular. Total sales, par value, 52,840.000. United States bonds were all unchanged on the last call. A. consid erable quantity of long wheat had been car ried over night In expectation of a continued rise today, but when there was no response In cables to the local bulge, everyone seemed to want to let go of hlshold!ngs, and a rap Idly sagging market was the result The usual bearish statistics were present again, with no Improvement In the cable list, and December droppped c to c lower at 69c to G95ic A sharp break of c re sulted from liquidation during the first half hour.
