Newspaper Page TextI I CENTRAL- ALBINA SUB-BOARD I Inspector Miller Makes His First .Report on. Beecli-Street Seiyer. A special meeting of the Albina Sub Board of Trade was held last night in the Mississippi avenue engine house. M. E. Thompson, president, presided. After reading and approving the minutes the board took up the Beech-street sewer sys tem, now under construction t r xrnior Inspector, appointed on request "of the Kuniu, uiuue an exienaed report of the condition of affairs. He took up ab6ut an hour making his report and answering questions. Mr. Miller said that he had been on duty about a week. A portion of the work had been done before his appointment He said as far as he could Judge a ilrst-class Job is being done, and that the stone mason and bricklayers employed are men who understand their work. He explained that there is consid erable difference between laying brick in a wall and in a sewer, but so far as the skill of the men is concerned he had no fault to find. "Where the sewer is being carried-through the tunnel under Wil lamette' boulevard the work is being thor oughly done The walls of the conduit are being thoroughly backed and tamped. Mr. Miller made extensive explanations ana answered every question to the sat isfaction of all present. According to his report the Beech-street sewer will be the best constructed In the city. President Thompson called attention to the necessity of getting In motion petitions for Important laterals. He said that it took considerable time to get the prelim inaries through the council, and the mat ter should receive immediate attention, if tho laying of laterals are not done in the winter. The matter was deferred un til a regular meeting, The committee on street sprinkling re ported nothing dorie. The board decided to make a determined effort to get streets in the Eleventh "Ward sprinkled. It was stated at the meeting that in the Tenth Ward streets are being sprinkled, but not a single sprinkling wagon had been seen in the Eleventh Ward, all of which Is regarded as unjust and unfair. The com mittee was Instructed to make a demand for a street sprinkler for Mutnomah In a way that cannot be misunderstood. M. E. Thompson, of the committee on widening of Vancouver avenue, between Alberta and Morris streets, reported some progress. He said that out of 9500 they had secured 2709 feet, with good prospect of getting more. Mr. Thompson said the committee had been over the street from one end to the other, explaining and argu ing with property owners in the effort to show the advantage of widening the ave nue. Some who had been opposed to the widening, he said, have come around in favor of It, but others still oppose it. On the whole Mr. Thompson said he was not' discouraged and believes the widening will be accomplished. Then and Now. New York Sun.
