THE MORNING OREGONIAN. SATURDAY, JULY 13, 1901. THE WORLD WILL BE FULL 1 .e Year 2250, According; to J. Holt SchooltBgr. Chicago Tribune. "Without asking counsel of Malthusian Ism, but merely by applying the 19th cen tury, average of increase to the future, Mr. J. Holt Schooling announces in the July Cosmopolitan that "the "world will be full" In the year 2250, at which time it will be Inhabited by 52,000 millions of per. cons, averaging 1000 to the square mile. This good-humored prediction, however, based on the assumption that the rate of 1 per cent per year of increase in the population of the earth, which obtained during the last century, will continue- in definitely, is only incidental to several Important and presumably reliable deduc tions concerning the movement of the earth's population during the last century. In the flrct place, it appears that, while this population according to the most re liable calculations increased from 682 mil lions lnlSlO to 1500 millions in 1S00, the rate of Increase was something like a third more rapid in the early than in the late portion of the century which fact would of course Impeach the propriety of applying the average rate of the entire century to the future. In the second place, the most striking of nil the results shown Is "the great su premacy that has been won during the 13th century by the Teutonic race over the Latin raoe." This Is shown in the fol lowing table, in which "Teutons" com prise the population of the United States. the united Kingdom and Germany, while the 'Xatlns" comprise the people of IFrance, Italy and Spain: 1S00. 1830. I860. 1890. Millions. Millions. Millions. Millions. Teutons ..42V, 67A 9SU. 149 Xatlns ....55 64 77 66 Prom these figures, omitting certain anlnor corrections, which might reasonably (be demanded. It appears that the Teutons wve increased ui a rate out. ol au pro portion to that of the Latins. The author accordingly remarks that, as the past .has been with the Latin race, the future 3s for the Teuton stock." In this general ization, however, he omits reference to Russia, with her increase from 35,000,000 to S2.000.000 between 1800 and 1890. None of the tables is more Interesting than the following, which gives the rela tive density of population in the principal 'countries of the world. Number of persons to the square mile: Russia 15; Germany 263 Italy 2S9 United Kingdom ..339 Holland 411 "United States .... 21 China 95! Spain 96 France 186lBelgium 572 '' The disparity thus shown In different countries sufficiently discredits the Idea I that social Ills at the present time are chargeable to the overpopulation of the earth. Russia Innocent for Once. Outlook. , How suspicious all are of Russia! Some years ago, one bright June morning, three warships were sighted off the east coast c-f Corea. I watched them make the en 'trance into the outer harbor, all appar ently with full steam ahead. Suddenly One stopped and let the others pass. In e set position she hung, steaming madly ell day long, with no noticeable change. She did not even turn with the tide; there she stood planted, as though not In water, but on land. The other vessels wheeled about, lowered their boats, and there was great commotion. "We learned at night that the Vitchlus had a- rock four feet through the bottom. The crew was land ed on an Island near by, and the Far East said, "Ah, ha! a trick of Russia to se cure a footing in Corea"; English came by and said, "By jove! these rascals are up to something"; Japan hove-to to "look Bee." AH Summer long the Russian fleet struggled with the ill-fated ship, and just when hope of success began to dawn a wild Autumn storm struck her and the ship "herself went down by, the -island crags to be lost evermore In the main." The Russians moved away, and the Far East still sometimes asks, "What do you suppose they were after?" The Arabs and the Telephone. Independent. TVe had a party of Arabs along with v us, and took them all over a great news paper office. Everything was wildly as tonishing to them. They had imagined that the Koran contained all the wisdom and knowledge of the world, yet hero was the telegraph, the telephone, the electrotype, the printing press. The place was a veritable enchanter's castle to them. They would never have believed in the telephone if I had not called up their hotel and got orje- of their own party at that end of the wire. The dervish who had come along was bold as well as jjious. When he heard that his friend, five jmlles away, was talking through the In strument, he made a dash at It. He was greatly excited, and yelled in a mega phone voice. He thought we were trick ing him. but here was his friend talking Arabic. He rolled his eyes at me in a despairing manner, and then began a search for devils, being quite convinced that the 'phono was an invention of Satan. AUCTION SALES TODAY. , At 10 A.
