FWi -Jgr-f THE MORNING OREGON! AN, ATURDiY. APRII 13, 1901. 11 COMMERCIAL AND local business was somewhat dull yes terday, although commission men on Ifont street had plenty to do. The full Spring movement Is not entirely under ' way yet. Farmers are making the most of good weather and perhaps will not do any large trading until the next rain shall take them from their present pursuits. Eggs were firm yesterday and consider able guantltles went into storage. Re ceipts have been slightly lighter this week than last, and from present Indi cations steadiness will continue for some time. The butter market was very -unsettled and merchants were not entirely agreed about the future. Some have d clded upon a decline next week and .under present conditions are not likely to -change their minds. Already sales under quota tions have been reported. Several mer chants believe the price has been held Tip too long, and that the market there by has- been glutted with California more than it would have been otherwise. One house will ship 200 cases in tin packages to Alaska today, and also "200 cases of ggs. Oregon cheese was still short of de mand. Well-seasoned llmburger and cream brick has advanced because of growing shortness of supply. Poultry was weak under pressure of large receipts. The market was bare of almost all vegetables except Oregon. Domestic rhubarb, which Is getting to be of "ex cellent quality. Is beginning to take the place -of cooking apples. Fancy Newtons have been bringing 52 50 this week. Large quantities of potatoes have "been com ing in and several thousand sacks went to San Francisco by last steamer. Far mers have greatly reduced their hold ings of late. Quotations were Arm. Onions were steady and San Francisco market was watched very closely, where con siderable speculation is going on, and where prices have made substantial gains . recently. Oats were -firm. Prune market -was dead and has .not been revived by the decline in California. Bank Clearings. Clearings. Balances. There was quite a bulge in the New York market yesterday morning, but the strength soon evaporated, and before the close of business, it was back where it started on the day previous. San Fran cisco was also weaker on Improved crop conditions. Xocally there is nothing do ing, and quotations are nominally un changed with 57 to 57 the usual quota tion "for Walla Walla. There is nothing doing in freights, no one caring to take ships under existing circumstances with wheat so firmly held. FJour Best grades, ?2 70JJ3 40; per bar rel; graham, 52 60. NEW YORK STOCK MARKET. Prices Were Fluctuating: and Opera tions Manipulative. NEW TORK, April 12. In today's stock market an Imposing aggregate amount of business was transacted, and there were considerable fluctuations in prices. The market was extremely Irregular all day, recovering sharply from the opening de pression, but yielding again before the close, which was heavy in tone and de cidedly below the best, but with consider able net gains remaining for many Im portant stocks. Operations were of a highly manipulative character, and seemed to have for their object to discourage the selling of stocks. No very aggressive efforts were appar ent to attract renewed buying and fluc tuations were by no means so violent or feverish as has been the rule of late. There were some wide advances among high-priced Investment stocks and some usually Inactive stocks, Northwest, after a preliminary decline, rising 4 points, St. Paul preferred 2&, General Electric 3, Brooklyn Union Gas 9, and a number of less prominent stocks from 2 to 3. Spec ulation continued active in the copper stocks and Amalgamated Copper Tallied strongly from Its opening loss, but' did not hold the advance well, closing with a net rise of only 1. Rumors were conflict ing regarding the status of the Burling ton deal. The stocks' extreme range wa"s 3. and It closed with a net gain of a point. Rock Island rose from last night's price and closed with a net gain of 4. The New York public utilities were all strong. The coalers also became strong, giving rise to a supposition that the dan ger of a strike on the New Jersey Central had been averted. The Money Market. The recovery here seemed to be closely connected with the more cheerful feel ing regarding the money outlook. This was not reflected In the money outlook it self until most of the day's requirements had been met, when belated lenders made -considerable concessions In the rate of interest. It was asserted that large loans were placed here for the account of Chi cago banks during the day. The prelim inary estimates of the Interior cash movement indicated that the balance against New York for .the week was In significant and the New York exchange at Chicago rose to 25 cents per thousand, compared with 50 cents yesterday. The sub-Treasury was a debtor today at the clearing-house to the extent Of $1,456,741, owing to large pension disburse ments and a payment of $500,000, made to the banks on account of the Philippine Army expenditures. The sub-Treasury has therefore taken only about $1,000000 from the week and next week will see the high level for the month of pension payments. After the close of business 'on the stock exchange announcement was made from" Washington that the Secretary of the Treasury had purchased $1,000,000 of Government bonds in this market. Thls, with the calling of loans by the banks, If it has resulted in the reduction- of the loan averages, will therefore have the effect of making a much less unfavorable bank statement than was apprehended. "The price movement of bonds was Ir regular. "TotaT 6ales, par value, $2,955,600. ' United States bonds were all unchanged on the last call. BONDS. U. S. 2s, ret reg.106 do coupon ....106 N. T. The most influen tial factor In "the wheat market early was the heavy export business as revealed by Immense clearances from the seaboard, which in wheat and flour amounted to L2S1.000 bushels. Of this, 915,000 bushels represented the raw product. A light do mestic movement ,and smaller shipments from Argentine, together with steady cables, completed the bullish array. May opened a shade lower to unchanged at 71c to 71)71c, and uhder covering by shorts and Investment buying, largely for the local account, rallied during the forenoon to 7172c. Outside support, however, failed when longs attempted' to take profits. Long wheat was offered be cause of the lightness of the day's export business and reports minimizing reports of Injury from Insects. Aside from a nar row .scalping Interest there was. nobody to care for the offerings, and May broke with considerable rapidity to 7070c. and closed weak c lower at 70c. The corn market preserved Its firmness, but offered little- interest. May closed un changed nt 43c. Oats were strong on a good cash demand and good shipping business. May closed unchanged at 25c. , Provisions were quiet and steady,, sus tained by Might receipts, higher prices at the yards and a fair cash demand.
