TRE MOTWTNft OBEGONTAN, FHIDAY, AJU;L, 12, 10Q1. 11 GOMMERGIAL AND General business -wes lighter yesterday, except on Front street, where new re- celpts from California hy steamer kept things active. The produce arrived In first-class condition, and moved off so lively that the market was almost cleaned xip by evening. Sacked vegetables con tinued scarce and high. Cauliflower was of poor grade, but up la price. Cabbage was 'plentiful, as -usual. Other fresh veg etables were limited in supply, and gen erally quoted high. Large quantities of potatoes were brought in by farmers, but prices were steady. Onions were some what weaker, in sympathy with San Prancisco, which has received a. large cargo from Australia. Eggs were steady.. A flurry at San Francisco several "flays ago wajj attentive ly watched by local dealers. Some mer chants erpect an opening soon In Califor nia, but none has anticipated -It by .ship ping. Poultry was- not so Arm yesterday as -dast week, and receipts have begun to crowd the market. The butter situation was very -unsatisfactory. Doubt is ex pressed that the Alaska demand will help steady the market this year, as ifdld last. Decline Is Inevitable to recur very soon, but as yet dealers have not got together Xor new quotations. Arbuckle's and jLion package coffee have -declined c per pound. Seeded raisins have fallen about 3c on one-pound car tons. This puts seeded raisins In package below bulk. The change is the result of action of the California Association, which is lighting Eastern jobbers. Under influence of larger "receipts, mo hair was weaker yesterday. "Wool showed 3io Improvement. In the North west, farmers are so busy seeding that they have no time to come to town, and there ds no wheat offering, -except an occasional small lot. J Notably Strong; Stories Lost Their Gains and. Close Was Dull. NEW YORK, April 11-Speculatlve liquidation was very clearly at work again in today's stock market. It was offset in the early part of the day by the aggressive strength of a handful of stocks. The ad vance In these was helped by violent ma nipulation, but It served to sustain the rest of the market in the face of heavy selling until the call money rate ran up again, when the pressure to sell became greater than the absorption power, and the market- turned weak Even the not ably strong stocks lost all their gains- as a rule and the market closed dull and -at about the lowest and at considerable net losses except In a very few stocks. -The arrival In London of the New York financier who has been the moving spirit of the recent vast financial projects In this country aroused some expectation that the London market would reflect In his presence there and that action would be taken on some of the projects which have been supposed to be waiting on bis counsel. The rumored Burlington deal was the most Important of these and the failure oif official confirmation of the very positive assertions which have been current that this action was accomplished had a great deal to do with the 'depression which permeated the whole market as the day progressed. ' It Is evident that the persistence of dis claimers of the deal that aaimgortant min ority of the stockholders is still opposed to it, even if It be true that actual con trol has passed to the Hill-Morgan Inter ests. The widespread belief In the pend ing consolidations of Importance In the copper world made Amalgamated Copper very active and buoyant, but here again the failure of expected official confirma tion aroused some feeling: of distrust among the speculators, who had bought most largely and with least Information and the profit-taking cost the stock prac tically all of Its 35( points rise. The Chicago & Northwestern stocks con tinued their remarkable rise, the common advancing 13 points and the preferred 11 points, each of them showlnir five points advance between sales. ' Denials from of ficial sources of the rumored consolidation of this road with Chicago, Minneapolis. St. Paul & Omaha and with tJnloh Pacific caused a reaction of the stock of 7. There were denials of the rumored sales of Con- solidaied Ga6 real estate," eausinga reac tion of four points from the stocks. The advance of 2 in Rock Island on 'rumors of Du'ylng for control by Pennsylvania was more than lost Sugar rose an extreme 334 and saved more of Its gain than other stocks. The United States steel stocks showed a most notable relapse from their early strength, closing at net declines of a fraction to a point. The selling pressure was marked In Burlington and In Northern Pacific, and It was only for a brief period that they were lifted at all over last night's close. The reaction In Burlington reached 5 arid In Northern Pacific 2. The Money Market. The requirements of the subtreasury andthe demand from the Interior contin ued to make inroads on banking reserves and the refusal by the Secretary of the Treasury of bonds offered him at the mar ket price discouraged the hope of relief from that source. The hardening of the money rate In London also causes-appre-prehenslon of a renewal of pressure for gold from that point, although the higher money rate here was sufficient to" cause a yielding In the sterling exchange rate today. The weekly return of the Bank of Eng land shows .that it has made heavy de mands upon the open matket for repay--ment of loans ana the-eomlng needs of the money market there give promise that the outside market must resort to the Bank of England again, .which would raakean ad- vance; n Jhe. rate effective inlnfluenclng the private discount rate as well as th6 exchanges. This was attributed to the talk about Botha's negotiations for a set tlement In South Africa. The general tendency in all the markets was to cover shorts, and this advanced orlces. American shares were buoyant from the opening 10 tne close. Erles were the features. Other favorites were.Unlon Pacific. In the street afterward there was a partial re action, which was ascribed to tight money in New York. The steel corporation's stocks are now being dealt in here. Copper stocks spurt ed sharply on the announcement of the Montanadeal of the-Amalgamated Copper Company. SMELTER PROJECT REVJVED Representative of 'British Columbia i Capital In Eastern Oregon". -David 8.-Fotherlngham," who Is said to represent British , Columbia capital, Is looking over the mining- country trib utary to Baiter City, to determine how much ore It is capable of furnishing to a custom , smelter-located af "Portland. Smelter has been talked at Portland for years; bul for some reason or other the enterprise continues to be without form and void. There is still a flagging interest ,in the project. For the benefit of those who have not given up hope, a few WDrds ald yesterday by George Gordon McNamara are herewith pub- -llshed.- He is a mining engineer of long experience who has just moved to Port land 'from Baker City. "Portland should by all means get In and build a smelter," Mr. McNamara said. "Nothing would be so helpful to its material progress? There may be reasons why local capital doe's not care to engage in an enterprise of such mag nitude. If there are, the commercial organizations of the city should com bine to lay the smelter project before Eastern me'n of money. The lack of a smelter at Portland Is a great drawback to the development of the mineral re sources of Oregon. Rates which East ern Oregon mines have to pay on ore shipped to the Tacoma and Everett smel ters are so high as to amount almost to prohibition. From Baker City the rate Is 55 a ton In . carload lots, and ahout 51 30 a hundred pounds In less thnn carload shipments. Ore coming from Granite must pay In addition the wagon rate to Sumpter and a rate on the nar row gauge road from Sumpter to Baker City. There are 100 mines In the Baker City district that would ship from two to three tons of ore a day to a smelter at Portland. Besides, Portland would have Washington, Idaho and British Co lumbia, and all the Pacific Coast from Cape Horn to Alaska to draw from. If Portland goes Into the business it should build at least a 100-ton smelter, repre senting an Investment of 5!j000,000. It would require that much to build and equip a first-clas3 plant and Insure suc cess." Temple Bctli Israel. Dr. Stephen S.
