THE MORNING OREGONIAN, SATURDAY. JANUARY 19, 19(tf. ' MEET NEXT IN CHICAGO NATIONAL LIVESTOCK CONVENTION GLOSED. Secretary of Agriculture Wilaon De- aonnced for Supporting the Grout Oleomargarine Bill. SALT LAKE, Jan. 18. The four days' cession of the National Livestock Con vention closed at i o'clock this after noon. Chicago was selected as the place for holding the next convention, the date to be fixed by the executive committee. The first order of business being the selection of the place for the next con vention brought out the full delegation, and the hall -was well filled when Presi dent Springer called the convention to order. Several resolutions were acted upon at the opening, one being a resolu tion that forest reserves be limited to ac tual timber lands. Considerable time was consumed In calling and correcting the membership rolL The regular order of business was then taken up. Mr, Gavin, of New Mexico, made a strong speech In favor of Chicago, and F. H. Sandburn set forth the advantages of Omaha. After Beveral seconding speeches, a roll-call was ordered. At close of the call It was apparent that Chicago was far In the lead, and ex-Senator Carey, of "Wy oming, moved that the selection of Chi cago be made unanimous, and there was not a dissenting -voice. At the afternoon session, a resolution Was passed asldng the Federal Govern ment to discover some remedy for vege table poisoning. A memorial to the Presi dent asked that the National Livestock Association be allowed to name a Second Assistant Secretary of the Interior. The Federal Government was asked to take charge of interstate tests of tuberculosis In cattle and appoint inspectors. Another resolution "condemned James "Wilson, Secretary of Agriculture, for allowing himself to be used by the Dairymen's Union to lend his official influence toward securing the passage through the Senate of the abominable Grout bill." Dr. V. A. Norgard, of Washington City, read a pa per giving a brief review of what the Bureau of Animal Industry was doing for the livstock industry In the way of stamp ing out disease. A. J. Knollln, of Idaho, spoke on the problems of handling large sheep interests. Georgo B. Van Norman, of Illlonls. spoke on "Livestock Exchanges and Their Relation to the Producer." The list of officers elected was read, and President Springer spoke briefly, thank ing the association for tho honor conferred upon him. The convention then at 4 P. M. adjoured, all joining In singing "America." PROTECTIVE TARIFF LEAGUE. Sixteenth Annual Meeting Held In New Yorlc. NEW YORK, Jan. 18. The lfkh annual meeting of the American Protective Tar iff League has been held in this city. Gen eral officers and standing committees were elected as follows: President, Charles A. Moore; first vice-president, Legrande B. Cannon; second vice-president, Joseph E. Thropp; treasurer, Chester Grlswold; executive committee "William Barbour, of New Jersey; P. C. Cneney, of New Hampshire; James Phillips, Jr.. of Mas sachusetts; Alfred Ray, of New York; board' of managers (expiration of term January. 19(6): Calvin Wells, of Pennsyl vania; James Phillips, of Massachusetts; Francis E. Juillard. of New York; Theodore M. Ives, of New York, and Joseph E. Thropp, of Pennsylvania. The operations of the league were em braced in the report of the sreneral secre tary. Briefly, the report was that the or ganization had received, including the cash balance on hand, 506,152. and that it had expended $62.S34. leaving a cash bal ance on hand of J8338. The total distribu tion of literature exceeded 135,000,000 pages. Bricklayers and Mason. MILWAUKEE. Wis., Jan. 18. Chief Or ganizer Odea, of the Bricklayers and Masons' International Union, presented his report at this forenoon's session of the convention.
