Irregular and Unsettled Condition, of Trade. NEW, YQRK, DeclS. The irregularity and unsettled, condition of the stock, mar. -ket today was due to various conflicting causes.,. There was still some evidence of the Important buying which has been in evidence for many, days, apd-which Is commonly attributed to operations by large -banking Interests, looking to tho consolidation of control of many com peting and connecting railroad systems. The buyingftof thls-'klnd was. however, distinctly less than for rfome time past. Efforts were made by professional oper ators" to gfv$ an appearance of a contin uance of this class of transactions. But the manipulative' character of many movements designed to give this, impres sion became obvious and begot some feeling of doubt and distrust. 'The crop of rumors regarding additional-plans for such conclusion still to be put In effect showed some vagueness, and -were uqt free from Intrinsic evidence of probabil ity. In spite of the credulous mood'whlch has "recently prevailed In Wall street ro--garding anything-that pointed to consoli dation, the influence of those movements and stories, therefore, lost some of their force. Another unsettling Influence was Lon don's change of front. After buying act ively here yesterday, that center sold freely -today. This was, of course, the outcome of the monetary situation In Lon don. With further military reverses In 13ontlr Africa and the foreign exchanges J running against her, it Is the common expectation that the Bank: of 'England discount rate will be advanced tomorrow. Such a condition Is always sufficient lp cause liquidation of foreign securities from London in the interest-of the money market.' No uneasiness is apparent over the money market outlook, so .far as tlie lmmedlatefuture Is concerned. The. Sub treasury Is" contributing to'the market by reason of large pension nayments In creased premiums on- Government "londs. J which are being rushed in for conversion IntD "the 2s befbre the refunding period expires, and some payments on assay office checks for gold deposited afPaclfio Coast points. While these conditions mark the safety of the money market, the possibility Is recognized of a pinch In the last.week of the year, especially if undue speculative commitments are allowed to eat up the resources of the market. These various conditions are the explanation of excee'd lngly varied markets, for stocks. Heavy selling to take profits continued side bv side with extraordinary advances In spe- ments. by far the most Impressive was the'advance in the Erie stocks, the com mon rising to 21&: the first preferred to 57s, and the second preferred to 39" There'was some wide movements among the minor VanderbiUs and connecting lines in central traffic territory. There was an active-upward movement In the steel 'group". In Sugar. Amalgamated Copt per, Missouri Pacific and the Southern! Railway stocks, but none of these was. weu sustained. Tne market closed fu rlously active and surprisingly steady, considering the large volurne- of dealings. The bond market' was as varied as thajt in stocks, and therefore realizing" at some points contrasted with n advance in price at others. Total sales, par value. $4,125,0). United 'State's refunding".
