REALS. Forecast Official. The Karaite, Jews. London Travel. These Karaite Jews claim that their forefathers -were among those carried away captive by Shalmaneser, and their distinguishing tenet is a strict adhesion io the letter of the written Scriptures, with utter disregard of the authority of the oral law or tradition. They say they came to the Crimea In the fifth century before the Christian era. but I know of nothing authentic to substantiate this claim to extreme antiquity, though from Inscriptions collected and examined by Firkovitch, a Russian Jew. there are in dications that in the Crimea, at least, the Karaites may have flourished as ear ly as the first half of the fourth century. In the cemetery we visited the grave of Firkovitch, who died in 1S74. Another tomb, on which I quite failed to recog nize some of the Hebrew characters, was pointed out and assigned to the well rounded age of 2000 years, and yet a third, upon which some professor was said to have treated, as the oldest of alL The cemetery at Baghchlseral Is walled, shad ed by oaks, cypresses and lofty trees, and was a spot so dear to the ancients that, according to Howorth. whenever the Khans "wished to extort from the Jews a present, it was sufficient to threaten them with the destruction of the trees for fuel or timber.
