THE MOENING OREGONIAN, 5AVUBDAT- DECEMBER 1, 1900. SANA OTAS - PRAISE: PORTLAND SCOTSMEN OBSERVE-ST. ANDREWS DAX. Eat Haggis ana Sins Song of Aula leaner Syne Greetlags-'fFrom Sinter Societies. Tlie St. Andrew's 'Society -' Oregon celebrated its twenty-flf th. anniversary of Et, Andrew's Day by a -smoking concert at Auditorium Hall, "last evening. The society was Incorporated In January JS75, vlth f2 members, comprising aboat the entire Scotch colony resident here -at tnat time, it has now about 75 members, among whom ate 14 of the original list, as fol owe: A. TV. 'Bennett, Robert Coll ier. William Cclllcr, John Cran, TV. B. Honey-nan, "VTHliam Kerron, James Lai law, Donald llackay, William Reld." T. Robertson, G. A. Steel, and Peter Taylor. The object -of tlie society is charitable and 'also to promote the social Interests of Its members. None shall participate in itsbounty but Scotchmen, or the fami lies or descendants of such, and only Scotchmen, or their descendants, are eli gible for membership. Tlie by-laws -provide that to further the interests of the society the members shall hold a general reunion on St. Andrew's day. In what ever inannci the society may deem the most appropriate, and to carry out this provision the smoking: concert was held last night. With the Scotch and American flagi twined In unity near him. President Al exander H. ICerr, of the St. Andrew's So ciety, arose, in the presence of -about 203 Scotchmen, to bid them welcome. He had the honor, he said, to read the following greetings telegraphed from sister socle ties: "Blithe an merry we'll a." be the nlcht." San Francisco St. Andrew's Society. "Accept our hearty greetings. The clochan yell has made us canty. Wc aro nae fou, but Just had plenty." St. Louis Caledonian Society. "Hoo's a wi ye, klmmer? Hoo dae ye thrive? The pipes hlaw, -we'll hae a reel, Syno -drink ycr health belyve." Vancouver St. Andrew's and Caledonian Society. "In no other race flows warmer blood than pulses through the hearts of the na tives of bonnle Scotland," proceeded Pres ident Kerr. He reminded them that 131 years ago, 3 Scotchmen, in Philadelphia. 'formed the first St. Andrew's Society In tms country. The Kew lork St. Andrew's Society was formed Jn 1756, and has tv permanent fund of $100,000. He could In form them that their "brlther Scots" were, like them, celebrating the festival of St. Andrew In Philadelphia, New York, Chicago, St Louis, Milwaukee, Detrot. Charleston, San Francisco. Halifax. Que- bec Montreal, Ottawa. Alexandria, Ham- llton, Windsor. Winnipeg, Rossland ana Vancouver. "If the Scot Is fond of his I native land, he loves his adopted land none the less. Where was there a grand er man that Sir Walter Scott: a more he- j role than Wallace: a nobler Xing than j Bruce? Let us make St. Andrew's Socie ty of Oregon a beacon light to the wrecked, a. haven to those In n:ed. the brightest star that glistens In the ilrma I ment of Scottish benevolence the world I over." British Consul Laldlaw made a patriotic t speech, in which he traced the origin of the St. Andrew's cross and the Scotch thistle. He took It for granted that those m the audjence were Scotch, and If they -were not, he was sorry. He snoke of the recent peril of the British Emnlre. in South Africa, and praised the deeds or the aoughty colonists who had helped the mother land on the battle field. Lord Roberts had said that the British sol diers were heroes in the field, and gentle men on all othr occasions. Kruger said something different." The speaker then proposed a toa"t to "the grand old wom an of the century. Queen Victoria." The toast was honored, and the British nation anthem s"iing. Mayor H S. Rowe said that the sturdy character and business ability of Scotch- linen command the admiration of Amer- I leans. SL Andrew's recalls to mind the well-known city of that name In Scot- hand, today better known as the location of the most celebrated golf links. Those who "watched our local plavers may rea sonably hope to see our Sellwood links (surpass In popularity those of ihe old Icoui try. Other speakers -were: Robert Llvlng- Istone, William McMaster. C. E. S. Wood. I Rev. Dr. Morrison, W. A. Gavin and Da vid Henderson. The famous Scotch dish of haggis was served, and songs were sung by W. K. IScott, W. A. Wright and the Epplng JuarteL George Anderson gave a violin - solo, and Pipers Moon and McArthur gave bagpipe selections. BUSINESS ITEMS.
