McKlnley Carried Ottxx State by an Increased Majority. COLUMBUS. O., Nov. 7. McKlnley baa carried his own state without doubt by an Increased majority, but at midnight It Is Impossible to give the figures, owing to the unusually meager returns received. The Democrats have gained about 3000 In Cleveland, as much In Cincinnati, and less Jn some cities. The Republicans have gained In the rural districts, In this city, and In Canton, the home of the Presi dent: In Akron, the home of Chairman Dick, and In a few other cities. Democratic State Chairman Long con cedes the state to the Republicans and expects a gain of one Congressman over the last delegation from Ohio in Congress, which stood 16 Republicans and 5 Demo, crats. Chairman Dick stands by his poll of the state, which he insists shows from 73.000 to 89.000 for McKlnley, and he Insists that the Republicans will gain two or three Congressmen. At this hour, the Indications are that McKlnley has gained largely In Ohio over 1S96, and that most of It came from the rural districts, with the exception of Co lumbus, Toledo, Canton, Akron, Spring field and a few other cities. It will probably require an official count to get the results in the 12th Congressional dis trict. Both Tompkins, rep. and Lents, dem, claim to be elected, and returns from 145 of the precincts indicate that neither candidate will have as much at 100. Al 1 A. M. no changes were announcea on National and state pluralities, but the Republicans claimed the election or Robert M. Nevln, In the 3d, and Emmet Tompkins, In the 12th Congressional dis tricts, leaving only the 20th district in doubt, in which the Republicans have two candidates. Chairman Dick claimed the 20th district at that hour and held that the Republicans would elect 17 of the 21 Congressmen, with a chance yet for tne 18th Republican member on reports from the 5th district, in which Snook, dem. and Hay are the candidates. The complete vote In Columbus gives McKlnley 17.616. Bryan 14.159: McKlnley's plurality over all, 3356, a gain of 2SS com pared with 180S. The board of elections gives McKlnley in Cleveland 37,792; Bryan, 27,422; McKlnley's plurality, 280. Four years ago McKlnley carried the city by 2515. COLUMBUS, O., Nov. 7. Nearly com plete returns show that Nevln, rep. Is elected to Congress from the 3d district by 100 to 500 plurality. COLUMBUS, Nov. 6. Out of 3109 pre cincts In Ohio the state committee had heard at 10 o'clock from less than 200 pre cincts, and from very few county com mitteemen, indicating no material change in the vote of 1896 when McKlnley had a plurality of 51,309. One hundred and sixty precincts out Elde of Hamilton, Franklin, Cuyaltoga and Lucas Counties show: McKlnley, 29, 441; Bryan, 24.SS5. Same In 1896: McKln ley. 29.434: Bryan. 25.466. Hamilton Coun ty. 240 precincts out of 2C9: McKlnley, 50, 636; Bryan, 35,546. COLUMBUS, O., Nov. 7. Complete re turns compiled by the State Journal show that Tompkins, rep. Is elected over Lentz, dem, in the 12th district by 65 plurality. Hamilton County. CINCINNATI. Nov. 6. In Hamilton County, 180 precincts ga'e McKlnley 3S. 881; Bryan, 27,089. Same in 1S96: McKln ley, 40.674; Bryan. 26.004. With four city precincts missing in Hamilton County, McKlnley's majority over Bryan Is 14,314. In Cleveland. CLEVELAND, Nov. 6.-Returns from about 40 precincts out of 1S2 In Cleveland show an average Democratic gain of about 20 to the precinct. This Indicates 'i the ctiy will be very close. Four years ago It gave McKlnley a plurality of 3500. In Cincinnati. CINCINNATI, O.. Nov. 6.-eventy pre cincts out of 204 In Cincinnati show Bryan gains of SCO. but McKlnley's plural ity in the county is about 12,000 or 18,000. Cnynhoira Connty. CLEVELAND, Nov. 6. In Cuyahoga County, 20 precincts give McKlnley 3580; Bryan, 3363. In Hamilton County, 200 pre cincts out of 2C9 give McKlnley 43,306; Bryan. 30,429. Franklin Connty. CINCINNATI. O., Nov. 6. Rfttm-n oin indicate the election of the full Republl- I t oiaie uckcl Dy majorities consider ably under the Presidential figures, the scratohing on the state ticket being con fined almost entirely to Cook County. Returns so far also Indicate that the Republicans have lost two and possibly three Congressmen In Chicago, the most sensational defeat being that of William Lorimer, one of the most prominent mem bers of the Cook County Republican or ganization In the 2d district. Outside or Cook County, the Congressional districts are In doubt, the Democrats claiming gains In one or two districts, but Re publican leaders assert that the delega tion will remain unchanged. It is practically assured that the next Legislature which will elect a United States Senator to succeed 3. M. Cullom, will be Republican on Joint ballot at least, and by a sufficient majority to elect & Senator. Democratic gains have been made In several Legislative districts In Cook County, and It is claimed by Chair man Watson that the Lower House will be Democratic by from one to three ma jority. Chairman Rowe. on the othtr hand, claims a working majority In both branches of the Legislature. In Chicago the McKlnley vote of 1S0C was cut down materially, the total vote bowing a plurality of but S446, hardly a quarter of what It was four years ago. The Prohibition and Social Democratic votes, which were expected to cut into the strength of the big parties, did not cut much figure. "Woolley'a total vote In Chi cago wee 3335, and that of Debs 5022. Bar ker, the Middle-of-the-Road Populist can didate, received but 189 votes, out of a total of over 962,000. Outside of Cook County. CHICAGO, Nov. 7. 1:20 A. M. Seven hundred and eighty-three precincts In Illinois, outside of Cook County, give Mc Klnley 153,160, Bryan 112,397. At mid night the result of the election In Ken tucky was In doubt, with both sides claiming the state and Presidential tick ets. The Democrats may be considered to have a trifle better of the argument. Ex Governor McCreery, chairman of the Democratic state campaign committee, said: "Bryan and Beckham have carried Kentucky by safe majorities. The Demo, crats have elected nine out of eleven Con gressmen, including Gilbert, In the Eighth, Kehoe In the Ninth and Rhea in the Third Districts." In these counties, B;ck ham, for Governor, has gained 1C39 over Goebel last year, while Yerkea has ga ned 1302 over Taylor In the same coun,t.es last year. Jefferson County (Louisville) la not included in this estimate. This indicates that Yerkes has been elected by a safe majority. In the Presidential race, Mc Klnley has probably run 1200 behind Yer kes In. the same counties." The Courier-Journal at midnight says returns from two-thirds of the counties In the etate show Bryan and Beckham ma jorities. The result will depend largely on, the size of the majority In the Eleven.h Congressional District, which Is heavily Republican. Returns up to 1:30 A. M. continue to show Democratic gains, though both rides still claim the election. In 94 out of a total of 18S4 precincts In the state, not Including Louisville, the reports showed: Bryan 23,669, McKln.ley 13,981; Bryan'a majority, 8588; Beckham, dem, for Gov ernor, 21,683; Yerkes, rep, 16,809; Beck ham,s majority, 5694. LOUISVILLE, jEyT. Nov. 6. At 10 o'clock both Democratic and Republican committees claim the state, though they furnish no figures in support of their claims. The Louisville newspapers claim that Bryan and Beckham or McKlnley and Yerkes have gained the victory In this state Just according to whether these pa pers support the Democratic or Repub lican tickets in the campaign Just closed. NEBRASKA. Bryan Falls to Carry His Home State Legislature Close. OMAHA, Nov. 6. At midnight M0 pre cincts out of 1611 in the state had re turned results of today's election, 10 of these being from Omaha and Douglas County. A majority of them give Re publican gains, which, If they hold gcod throughout the state, will indicate a Re publican Jlurallty of from 2000 to 6000. However, the fusionlsts say these returns are not significant of the leal result, and that the outlying districts will overcome these gains and give the state to Bryan by from 5000 to 8000. The result of the vote on the National ticket will no doubt also determine the victories on the state ticket, both running very close together. Although not a factor, the Proh'b't on ticket shows a gain over four years ago. It will require a pretty futf count to e ,termlne the complexion of the Legisla ture, and both sides are claiming a v.c tory on joint ballot. Chairman Hall, of the Democratic State Central Committee, was reticent with .re gard to the result, and refused to give any figures. Many counties, have not beeu heard from, others have only estimated, and none have full returns. A hard fight has been made by the Republicans all over the state on legislative tickets in the interest of Senator Wolcott, who is a can didate for re-election, and it is possible that Republican Representatives have been elected In some counties which went for Bryan. There Is little doubt that Congressman John C Bell is re-elected in the Second District, and It is believed that John F. Shafroth Is re-elected in the First, but this cannot be said positively.
