THE MOBNING OREGONIAN, MONDAY, OCTOBER 22, 1900. OJJR EXPORTS TO CHINA VALUE MORE THAN QUADRUPLED Hi PAST FIVE YEARS. That Time the Empire's Total Import Increased Only 54 Per Cent The Official Reports. WASmNGTOX, Oct. 17. -American trade -with China shows a more rapid growth than that of any of the European countries. The official reports of the Chi nese Government for 1S93, the details of -which have Just reached the Treasury -Bureau of Statistics, show that the im ports into Clilna from the United States la that year amounted to 22.2SS.745 Haik "wan taels CHalkwan tael is eaual to 72c), against 17,163,312 taels in 1KB, 12,440,302 in 3897, u.920,853 in 1896, and 5,033,182 taels In 3SS5. Thus in the four years from 1895 to 2899 the Imports into China from the "United States -have more than quad "rupled. During the same period the im ports into China from Great Britain In creased .from 33,950,000 Haikwan. taels in 395 to 40,10,115 In 1K)9. and from the Con tinent of Ehirope (Russia excepted) they Increased from 7.552.099 Haikwan taels in 2S35 to 10.172.3S8 in 1899. Thus, while the Imports from Great Britain shpw an in crease of IS per cent from 1895 to 1B99, and those from Europo show an increase of' 33 pat cent, those from the United States show an increase of 337 per cent. Taking the imports from all parts of the world, the figures for 1895 show a total of 17LK,715 Haikwan taels and In 399 2G4,74,456, or an increase In the entire Importation of 54 per cent, against an In crease of 337 per cent in the imports from the United States. Reporting upon the foreign trade of Shanghai, the Commlsisoner of Customs at -that port says: 'The Import trade in piece goods during the year showed great vitality. Almost every item of importance shows im provement, the most remarkable being found In white shirtings, sheetings of all .descriptions, chintzes and twills, hand kerchiefs, towels and cotton flannel. Not withstanding the continued Increase in the consumption of American domestics, Eng lish goods have managed to show satis factory progress. There are several makes, notably prints and dyed fancy fabrics, which are not interfered with by American competition as yet; and al though they must be looked upon more as luxuries than as actual necessaries the irade in them is growing in importance and -value." The Commissioner of Customs at Can ton reports as follows: "The value of our foreign Imports ex ceeded that for 189S by nearly 2,000,000 taels, being 13,861,995 Haikwan taels. With the exception of cotton ytfrn, nearly all the staple articles, such as Manchester goods, kerosense oil, and American flour, advanced considerably." Commenting upon, the growth in the import trade at Tien Tsin, which showed a gain of 6,700,000 taels over 1S9S; the Commissioner at that point says: "The conspicuous gains are in white shirtings, and more especially in Ameri can sheetings; this last aTticle having gained 90,000 pieces over the record of 2S98. American drills have declined 17 per cent below the import quantity of 1898, although as regards value they show & gain of 6 per cent. American kerosene oil has fallen off greatly, the import (1,868,000 gallons) being only half that of 3SS8. Machinery, railway materials, mu nitions of war and Government stores all show an Increase over the figures for 2fi97 and 189S." Passing of Georse JPVea William. Boston Herald. The rebuke administered on "Wednesday to George Fred "Williams by the demo crats of "Worcester and the surrounding towns constituting the Third congression al district (by the renomlnation of John R. Thayer, the democrat who supported the cold standard act) was severe and puni tive. It signifies that the term of this swaggering, would-be boss of the demo cratic party in Massachusettes is coming to an end. It signifies further that the democrats of the state are in open revolt against having 16 to 1 made the shibbo leth of party fealty hereafter. They never believed in it as a party, and fewer of them now believe in it than at any time eince 1896. For its reafllrmatlon in the Chicago platform they do not care a rap, and they will treat it with silent contempt or open indignity as circumstances may dictate. The paslng of that doctrine of fraud and dishonor means the passing of Georse Fred Williams as the master of the Democratic organization in this state. DAILY METEOROLOGICAL. REPORT. PORTLAND. Or..
