THE' MOR3TI3FG OBEGONIAN. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBEE 3, 1900. !' THE DAY OF AIONEMENT SERVICES BEGUN AT TEMPLE BETH ISRAEL. Rabbi Stephen Wise Feaehe an Eloquent Sermon to a. Great Congregation. The services of the Atonement Day were begun last evening' at the Temple Seth Israel. The services are named jivoI Kidre, after the opening .song, Tvhl:h dates from the time -wnen the Jews of medieval Europe -were compelled to prac tice the rites of other religions outwardly, while at heart they remained ljyal ana law-abiding members of the House of Is rael. The services T?ere marked oy a number of exquisite poetical passages, which have been handed down by Hebrew tradition for many centuries. Some of the greatest of the Jewish poets, like Kalir and Solomon Ibu GeLiral, have en hanced the leauty of ihe atonement serv ice with the music of their soul-stirring songs. Dr. Stephen S. Wise preached the ser tmn btforA crowded congregation, which included a large number of the npn-Jew-lh residents of the city, and his elo quence and broad llbcraity crca.ed a deep impression. In opening Ir. Wise referred to the "cities of refuge," which the biblical law provided for a man who had slain his Aelghbor, in -order that he might escape the fury of a mob or the passion of an avenging brother. "This night's service," said Dr. Wise, "provides such cities of refuge for tae caul, Trhlch tiles away rrom the deadly consequences of Its shortcomings and transgressions. What these cities of ret tre are -we learn from the ort-rep.atid maxim of the rabbis, 'Penitence, prayer and charity avert the evil decree.' By evil decree Tve mean not the arbitrary decree of a higher power, but the de.-rej-lng and determining of evil as the ruling norm and principle of our lives; 'tis meant that by prayer, penitence and char ity we may bring it to pass that goodness, purity and holiness be enthroned as the reigning principles of our existence "Penitence tokens a return to self not ruckkehr, but einkehr a return to one's higher, truer self. Man hath a dual na ture, for God hath formed him out of the dust of the earth, and has likewise made nlm In his -own image. Tonight we are bidden to put away the earthy, fleshly aspect of life, to return and cleave unto the Godlike, "Which dwells within us. "Prayer, the second of the cities of ref uge. Is an attitude of the soul, and has reference to the constant recognition of God's rule of the world. Prayer should find tokens of thankfulness in days of prosperity and enlargement, resignation in hours of adversity and affliction, beget ting strength and heroism from amidst pain and suffering, and translating talents and blessings and riches into opportunities for .doing good unto another. "'Charity, the third of the cities of ref uge, signifies not the mere giving of alms to the needy, the succoring of the widow, the helping of the distressed, but Is rather in the Hebraic sense charitableness in thought, in speech and in deed. That man who leaves this house of God to night hating his brother In his heart, cher ishing an enmity against any man, hath not found peace and atonement with God. As -we would that God pardon us on this day of forgiveness, so let us be forbearing, tolerant, charitable, loving toward one another. "An Eastern legend hath It, when the first of men sinned, he no longer saw the angels who had rejoiced his heart and blessed his vision before his fall. When we sin we shut -out the visions of heav enly things before our eyes nay, more, I the things of heaven cease to -be. Evil sees evlL May we tonight be as the pic- j turea yueen on an olaen canvas, typify ing faith. Before her marched a messen ger tokening penitence, and in her train there followed a host of angels, symboling good works. So may the soul of every one of us hasten onward and upward to the olties of refuge, the spirit of contrite ness going before, touching all that is past, a host of good works following, prophetic of a future crowned with high aims, -noble aspirations, heaven-bent en deavors." Dr. Wise will preach this morning, and also in the course of the memorial serv ices of the afternoon. DAILY METEOROLOGICAL REPORT, PORTLAND, Oct. 2. 8 P. M.
