COMMERCIAL AKD The wheat markets -tore easier yester day In Europe and the East, and the "Weakness was Intensified In the 3ocal ..market throueh a further jad5moe in freights, a small ship being chartered at 52s 6d, a rate which overtops AnythlriS that has been paid for many years., xe tails of this charter have not been made public, but It is believed that it was 2or barley, and not for wheat. Exporters liave reduced their limits 'to 55 -and 56 cents for Thalia "Walla, -and some of them report that they are - receiving more wheat than they care for at 56 cents. Bluestem is easy at 59 cents, and yalJey is strictly nominal at CO cents. There is some talk of the present high rates! of freight starting wheat to Liverpool by the overland route to the Atlantic seabord. The rates from Portland have almost reached a point wher wheat from in terior points can seek an outlet by the transcontinental Touts, but as. th,ere is quite a premium palrX pn floating cargoes "Liverpool dealers wJU not liandie 'wheat shipped otherwise exceDt at lower flsr- arcs. It is rpp'orted that some rotmd lots j jiave ocen' purchased -in the Palouse points for shipment to the East to be used for mixing-purposes with the wheat which is not so dry as usual this season. It is hardly probable, however, ilmt this "business will reach very great propor tions, unless there should be a further rise in freights. The hop market seems to be at a stand still, and'itonie dealers are not1 so san srulne abbut the future as they have been. A tew. straggling sales have been made at ft to 14 cents, but there-lp not much doing. In the fruit market there Is an overstock of apples, with only a limited demand. There is a good crop on all sides -of Portland, and the market Is limited to this city, which will not take up all of the Offerings. Some heavy sac rifices were. made yesterday to, clean up stocks of chjckens, and hundreds were 3old at 12 per dozen. Eggs are weak at quotations, "'Bank Clenrrnprs. Exchancos. 3alanccs. KEW VOR?C STOCK JIAHKEJ'T. Heavy Liauidatlon In A'ortHenj Va effte, Due to' Foreign Influence, 1CEW yORK, Sept. 2S.-Stocks were Te actlopary again today on the substantial satisfaction of the vrgerit demand from the short interest. The brokers were tpo busy on the floor last night ja tho clos ing hour 4o notice what was golpg on In the loan'-'crowds, but the fact was dis closed this morning that the supply of FINANQIM, NEWS !?. ?M asa,a very-abundant-as a T J". ine nezvY feducUon in the out tnainjr short interest nnrt ib nnnsn- jiuent borrowing demand f of stocks. Thls: u iiseti was sufficient to indicate a re action, as the existence of -a large short interest Is a potential -support-to prices, and its elimination materially weakens tho technical position of a market. In addition, there was the usual lack of explicit official information regarding yesterday's rumored strik settlement and some natural reaction In sentiment as a consequence. But the underlying conviction remains unshaken that a set tlement is in course of arrangement. There were strong spots among the coal- ers, Reading first .preferred, advancing at the opening on its good Showing of Au gust net earnings, and Lackawanna ris ing an extreme -3 on the declaration of the regular quarterly dividend. This served as something of a drag on the downward coursey of the market. Grow ing weakness developed among some of the specialties, and heavy liquidation was In evidence in Northern Pacific, the stock declining 2. The liquidation was attrib uted to Berlin account, the Berlin stock market continuing in a highly unsettled condition -owing to the growing strin gency of money. Declines for many of the prominent stocks ranged from 1 to 2 points from the lowest, and the de mand to covejv-shorts .at the.d.ecline-was slight. The market closed dull and heavy. The prpspect pf an unfavorable batik statement was a notably .depress ing factor. Sterling exchange steadied in New York today, but exchange on Berlin and Paris fell sharply. Liquidation in the stock market has not been as large as last week, but a smal decrease in loans is expected tomorrow. The inroad upon surplus reserves will, nevertheless, be of formidable propor- i tion. The assistant treasurer was debt or at the Clearing House today .for up wards of $2,250,000 as the result of two checks for gold received from rAustrala at San Francisco a week ago. But thl3 gain by the banks will figure for only one day ln-tha averages.
