ABTOHIA, Or., Auff. 2L President A. 1 Nobler. General Auditor E. S. Benson, Chief Engineer "W. H. Kennedy- and At torney "Wirt Minor, of the O. R. & N. Co., arrived here this evening from Il waco, and left at once on the evening train for Portland. When asked about the reported purchase of the Ilwaco road Ly the O. H. & N., Mr. Mphler said his company had had control of that line by purchaee for some -time, but the formal transfer of the property was not made until yesterday. A meeting was held to day, and directors elected as follows: ll A. Loonus. Wirt Minor, E. S. Benson and W. H. Kennedy. Mr. Mohler -was elected president. Mr. Mohler stated that for the present at least the road and boats "would be op erated as In the past, but the plans for the future had not been determined. As to building a line down the north side of the river, he said his company had no Intention of doing so. In an Interview with a newspaper rep resentative. President Mohler said: "The Ilwaco Railway & Navigation Company's property was purchased by us August 7, but we will not take charge until September 1." Asked If 2ie Intended to procure deep water terminus for his line here, he said: "We have no intention of leaving Port land, but contemplate increasing our fa cilities there." BOUKD TO HAVE A ROAD. "Worlc Besrnn Between. Brownsville nod Bine River Mines. (BHOWINSVaXilE, Or., Aug. ZL Active "work on the building of the new wagon road from Brownsville to the Blue River Dilnlnc district was begun today. A crew of men with teams and supplies left here yesterday for a point about 20 miles up the Calapooia River, where the new road will commence. Men and teams will be added as the work progresses, it being the Intention to push the road through as rapidly as is consistent with good mountain roodbulldlng. Qeorea Padley, an old gentleman who has been trying to hatch chickens by hieena of an Incubator, yesterday allowed the water In' bis machine to escape, and thfl result was an explosion, which left htm terribly, probably fatally, burned abontthe head and arms. The work of putting In a local tele phone exchange by the Oregon Telephone & Telegraph Company -was completed to day. This Is an improvement greatly ap preciated, as evidenced by the number Triio have subscribed. IMPROVEMENTS AT DETROIT. Ziosfirlnar Canal and Dam A JTerr Tel ephone Line. DETROIT, Or., Aug. ZL The Curtis "Lumber Company is constructing, a canal between the pond above the end of the spur on the Breltenbush and the railroad track at that place, for the purpose of floating logs down to be loaded on the cars. The canal Is 600 feet long, IS feet deep by 12 feet wide, cut through solid cement gravel, by means of blasting, at a cost of about ?2000, and will be boxed on the inside with lumber, with a flood gate at each end and will be a very sub stantial structure. The canal will also furnish water power for loading the logs, thereby saving the "expense incurred by loading -with steam. The company also Intends building a large dam for the pur pose of storing logs to be held In reserve for the Winter season so the mills will be able to run when the logging camps are compelled to shut down on account of bad weather. This will keep the mills constantly supplied with logs for lum ber. The telephone line has been completed between Mill City and Detroit, a distance of 22 miles. There is some rivalry and speculation as to who wyi set the office but it will be a great convenience at any rate. There has been quite a rich quartz strike near Detroit within the past week. Tout claims have been located and from the appearance of men slipping off through the timber with packs on their backs, there will be more locations recorded soon. The Breltenbush hot springs are fast be coming popular as a health resort, the numbor of campers this year being fully twice as many as in any previous sea son Tho springs arc about 14 miles east of Detroit, being reached from this place by pack train. The ride is exceedingly plcturestjuo and thrilling. A Texan Fend, FORT WORTH, Tex.. Aug. L In a four-handed light In Polk County result ing from a quarrel over family affairs. Go.be and Cicero CopeJand were instantly kllled, and John and Charles Baker prob ably fatally wounded. The men battled at 20 pares with Winchesters. CLASSIFIED AD. RATES "Room. "'.Rooms and Board."
