THE MOROTNG OBEGONIAN, SATURDAY, AUGUST 18, 190ft. WOOL IS LOOKING UP SEVERAL SALES MADE AT HEPP NER. AT BETTER PRICES. ChicBco Bnrcw Enter tte Field Lambs Are Selling; at S2 -a. Head to Feed "Over "Winter. HEPPKTER. or., Aug. 16. The Hepp ner -svoal market has taken a. .turn for the better, and recent ales foot up about 50,oor -pounSs. The arrival of a Chicago buyer Trell known here seems ti have Infused new life Into the situation. His first act after arrival was to buy Georgre Conser clip of SWOT pounds- at 14 cents. This Is the highest price paid here for any considerable clip since shearing. The buyer expresses the opin ion that there "will be a good -wool mar ket Inside gZ SO days. Ed Day has sold his clip of 87,000 pounds at 12 cents, and Harry Cummlng-s received the ,saroe price for his. while Henry Gay's went at 12 cents. Ecs -Sheriff A. Andrew? .sold his 40,000 pounds at 10 cents, but it Is the heary wool raised in gand Hollow. Many other sales are pending, and con ditions seem to be Improving. Sheep are In active demand at firm prices, and 50,000 head have recently changed owners in this district. The main movement is in lambs which will come -out of the mountain fat In Octo ber and be delivered on contracts re cently made at J2 a head. The men who Duy will Winter them, get their wool in the Spring and then sell them as year lings to Eastern buyers. There Is plenty of hay -here to "Winter all stock. In an average "Winter it re quires SO tons to feed a band of 2000 sheep. Alfalfa has become the favorite feed here, and very large crops of it are now raised throughout the Heppner country. All the cheep transactions here are amon home peopV- Morrow -County is piling up a very large surplus of -wheat for export, and her farmers report a choice, plump ber1 ry, with yields varying from 15 to 23 bushels to the acre. Many of the crops are this season paying more than the entire cost of the farms on which they are raised. Valuable minerals that are known to exist in, the mountains south from Hepp ner are now receiving attentlon, and considerable prospecting Is going on. D. B. Stalter, Lee "Watkins and Edward 3IoNamara left here yesterday with a full mining outfit tn develop a claim that Mr. Stalter has discovered. It car ries free-milling ore that goes as high aa JCOO to the ton in gold. Butter and eggs are now very scarce In Heppner. The hens are busy re-feath ering, and there is too much haying ana harvesting going on to bother about but ter. J. H. Thompson, of Hardman.1 Is bere -having three broken ribs doctored up, the result of being bucked off a niild cyed cayuse. Mr. Rceder on V. S. Senator. Pendleton Tribune. "You may put me down, if you like," said Representative L. B. Beeder, "as one of the members of the Legislature with a determination to elect a Senator. Eome good honest man, no matter who. that will represent the state well in the Jfatlonal Legislature. I may have pref erences when the time comes, but I shall be ready to give them up when I know my man cannot be elected. I am not etrongly in favor of any candidate, and I am decidedly opposed to a hold-up. There are plenty of men In Oregon that would make good United States Sena tors, and I propose to use my efforts to ward electing the best -man that can be agreed uppn. I look for a bitter fight between the candidates. 1 shall bo 1n fa vor of going- inta a caucus There Is too much time and consideration given to the selection of a "United States Sen ator, which la unnecessary, and I am go ing tyo the Legislature free handed and Tinder obligation to no one to do the best 1 can toward quickly electing a succes sor to Senator McBrlde."
