It has been blighted heretofore by hot winds; but there have been no hot winds to do damage this year. There were some cold winds and frosts before grain headed oiitt a month or more ago. Perhaps what may hate caused it was the cold winds that prevailed every few days the past few weeks -while the bloom was on. '"The conditions given are for this sec tion only, and will include a radius of perhaps 10 miles. From other sections, notably from farther west, come better reports, three to four grains in each mesh being the number. It will be better under stood in the future, and those interested in wheat culture will probably not be so deceived again by rank growth of straw. As to what ailed the heads to cause them to be so small, 1 must say It is a subject upon which the doctors -will dis agree. My own opinion, which may be wrong of course, is- that the heads were iniured while in the boot by heavy frosts at that critical point. Having made ex amination in different fields of the wheat -which had headed out, I found numbers of stools lh which one or more stalks had ben killed outright, perhaps a week dr two before the time to head. While) thoe has ben a falling .off of fully 25 per cent from the early pros pects, it should by ho means be under stood that this county Is not harvesting n good crop. The early prospects were li to 10 points above any other season, 1SS8 not excepted. I have no mean of knowing w'hat the acreage for the ddiihty is. but others who claim to be in a posi tion to know say there 1b 400,000 acres In cultivation. Half of this, approxi mately, Is In wheat each year1, and the other half in Summer fallow. Taking the harvest reports from all over the county it Is doubtful If the average w'll he more than 23 bushels, and may not reach over 224, giving an aggregate of 4,600,000 to 5 000.000 bushels. In addi tion, there is rome Spring grain grown on land not Summer fallowed, the duahtlty produced probably just about equaling' the amount which could have been grown on Summer fallow planted to barley. I has been claimed that there has been an increase of 5 per cent In acre age the last two or three years. Assum ing thlt. to be correct, there would be an lncraa of 20.000 acres. Half of this in crop would be 10,033 acres Increase this year. It should be borne in mind that this Increase in acreage Is almost entirely from outlying sections -which had been abandoned W or 12 j ears on account of unprofitableness of production and prices.
