THE MOANING OKE0OKIAK, SATURDAY. JULT 28, 1900. 9 TWO PARTIES' CAMPAIGN CONTRAST BETWEEN REPUBLICAN AND DEMOCRATIC PROGRAMMES. Roosevelt's Strength a Grent Deal More Than Stevenson's, "Who Will Make a Quiet Canvass. "WASHINGTON. July 22. There Is a Erreat contrast to be obsorved In the cam paigns that Will be headed oft by the two parties this Fall. On the part of the Republicans, their nominee for President will, as in 1SS6, remain silent, -while Bryan will again take the stump, and be almost as active and ajgresslve as he was four years ago. In contrast with the last cam paign, however, the tall of the Republican ticket will be very active and energetic in campaign work, while his opposite, Stevenson, will make a quiet campaign among the more conservative element of the party. McKlniey follows the ap proved precedent that has been handed down for years, and Bryan makes a stab for a. cheap grade of popularity, which did not succeed four years ago. Roosevelt's strength will be greatest among the young voters of the land. To them he will appeal strongly, not only on account of his past activity, but because of his being in touch with the younger element all over the country. He Is a young man among the young men, and has won their admiration and helr ap plause. He will likewise win their sup port, and it is expected that alone he will bring into line a large majority of the Voters who were not of the voting age at the last Presidential election. Stevenson, In contrast, will make a quiet campaign, and will appeal particularly to the old-line Democrats, who have been dissatisfied with the party since the silver craze became paramount, and it is his aim to bring this element back into line by convincing them that the objectionable features have been subordinated. His campaigning will not be of the rousing sort, but will depend rather upon his per sonal strength for its force and influence. And, aside from his public campaigning, Stevenson Is the Fort of man that will work quietly and privately In a way that Is -sure to make votes, though in smaller numbers. Bryan's oourse Is still a matter of specu lation, but he has lost little, if any. of his old activity and ambition, and It will probably be found that he will be as alert and aggressive as he was when "he made his nrst famous campaign. His cam paigning may not be quite as extensive as in 3895, but for the sake of receiving more recognition at the hands of the newspapers, he may curtail his campaign somewhat. Four years ago he talked so much and, repeated himself so many times that he finally received little or no notice In the press, and his speeches had weight only with those who heard him. This year he may cut down the number of his speeches, In the hope of having more circulated through the papers, and thus reaching a larger number or voters than he could possibly do personally. He needs np advertising to make him known, and his candidacy is known In every nook and crannie of the country. He will probably aim to make such a campaign as will keep Interest in him at the high est point, without going too far" to spoil tho effect. There is now some talk of chasing Charlie Tawne around through the West after Roosevelt. Towne's friends are very anxious to have him pitted against Roosevelt on the stump, as they feel that he has as much Influence in the "West as the Rough Rider, and think In that way to break the force of Roosevelt's cam paign, in his pwn neighborhood Towne might succeed, but through the great west as a whole he would find that he had an enormous task on his hands. Stel. and Iron 'Conference. - CHlCAGOr-July 27.-The conference of the representatives of the steel and iron Interests of the country was resumed at the offices of the Federal Steel Company, In this city, today. E. H. Gary, president of the Federal Steel Company, stated to the Associated Press that all interviews purporting to come from him were un authorized, and predicated upon mere guesses. He stated that so far as he knew no general shutdown of the mills was probable. He said tho combine had been shutting down the furnaces from time to time as the exigencies of business required, but no radically new policy Is now contemplated. Some of the steel ml.ls had. he said, been closed, and more might be, if a prudent financial manage ment should deem Jt advisable. Eating: Up tlxc Democrats. St. Louis Globe-Demlcrat, "It is now about nine years," said Mr. Bryan in a recent speech, "since "the Democrats and Populists of Nebraska began to be friends with each other." And on the latest fusion state ticket the Democrats got nothing but a minor office. One more year ought to finish the Job. DAILY METEOROLOGICAL REPORT. PORTLAND. July 27.-8 P.
