KBW YORK STOCK MAKKET. General Characteristics of Strcmrtli and Breadth Retained. :SEW TORK. Ksh. 6. The stock market re tained its swsteral chacterletle3 today of strength and. breadth. A large outside Interest was manifest, and the professional operators who bought at the lower fevel were busy in bid ding up the prices of utelr holdings and in feeding the new demand to take their profits ; but while eUtog stocks frum the one hand to rea ' on the- rtea, they were taking on new r a lings of different stocks nrlth the other. Ap parenth the coawdonce that stocks which had not iet shared la the advance eouM be induced to move upward was unimpaired, and the hold ings of the lame financial interests whleh hae taken hold of the market were broadened and rtnded The duration of this kind of upward movement dots not always depend strletiy On the continuance of the public demand for stocks. Ttwre is a constant process of unloading by compact and wettrsaatsed financial interests Into the hands mC soattered and unskilled spec ulators who have not the same experience and adroitness In protecting their holdings nor the erwne resources ler meiatalatag them. The progress of a bull movement almost in evitably results m the transfer of holdings from strong to weak hands, and leaves the market vulnerable t attack W bear opera tor. who are able to force selling by offering down pncee and uncovering mvrgtne. Even today at tempts by bear operators were In evidence to fore declines, hut the general demand for mortos continued good and the large holdings I- still in suoh strong hands that the market restated the bear assault and presented a hard SV unvleldtag awKmit at point where realis ing waa going Teterdaye strength in Na tional Steel tv way to realizing today, and the met.ru, - seaehs was without any ess spteaow lw4awiw. Norfolk & Western was FINANCIAL NEWS also sold to take profits all day, after an open lag rise of a. point, but refused to yield below last night's level. Tennessee Coal -was forced down at oue time 3 points. The bears centered their attack on Sugar, and had that stock down at one time to 108. Ru mors that the refineries were shut down and overproduction to be worked oft at a loss figured in the manipulation. But in the mean time aggressive buying movements developed in the trunk lines, led by Pennsylvania, the coal ers. Beading first preferred on the decision to pay the dividend, and in the grangers and Westerns, led by St. Paul and Atchison, both common, and preferred. The Baltimore & Ohlos also, after a pause of- a, day to .digest profit taking, renewed their advance. The progress toward extension of holdings by the great rail road systems of lesser and competing systems had much to do -with the strength of Pennsyl vania and other lines supposed to be in process of absorption. The coming advance In .the tidewater freight rates on bituminous coal was also an element. In the outside market there was an advance of over 3 points to 345 in the price of Standard Oil on the declaration of a dividend of- 20 per cent for the quarterly period. Last year's divi dends were 6, 12, 5 and 10 per cent, respect ively, for the four quarters. There was also activity in the Amalgamated copper shares. The close was active and strong at about the top. The bond market showed Increased activity and general strength. Total sales, $3,625,000. United States 3s advanced per cent, and new 4s Per cent In the bid price. BONDS. U. S. 2s, reg 102Gen.
