THE MOBNING " OBEGONIAN, OTURSDAY;" JANtiBY 'll 1900. NO OSTRICH RACE. Colonel Brj-an'ii Profound Tlegrard for tlic "Consent of the Governed." New York Tribune. We knew it. There -was no truth In the report that Mr. Bryan and ex-Governor Hogg, of Texas, had decided to race each other mounted on two able-bodied os triches which the ex-governor owns. Al though Mr. Bryan has shown great skill In riding a hobby for several years past, Te don't think he would be able to ride an ostrich, even if, by any piece of good luck, he did succeed In mounting It. The chances are 16 to 1 that he "would be ithrown. But the chief reason for disbelieving the story remains to he stated. To ride on the back of an ostrich would be. In effect, to govern It. Such government of the ostrich would be "without Its consent. .And it is impossible to suppose that Mr. 3Bryan would ever accept the principle of igovernment without the consent of the .governed. We are aware that, accor ing to the press dispatches, Mr. Bryan has xecently been violating this principle by Srolng hunting n Texas, for presumably the hunted animals didn't consent to be shot. But, -unfortunately, we can't be lieve everything we read nowadays, and, besides, we think the kicking possibilities of the ostrich would' have reminded him of its non-consent, even If he had been Inclined to ignore it So the ostrich story "has to be given up. But not the interest 3n Mr. Bryan as a sportsman. In a few days he is to begin an active pursuit of the money devil, universally known as the -octopus. Clad in the panoply of supreme cenfidence In himself, he will track this octopus to its lair it is funny, by the way, how octopuses always live in lairs and in the hearing of the. whole world hurl at it some of his choicest epigrams. e Defiance to Fenians. Calgary (Alberta) Herald. The alleged Fenian invasion of Canada need not scare anybody. If they start, it Is to he hoped that the American gov ernment will not try to stop them. We a.re spoiling for a fight just now, and -would willingly kill something that ought to be killed. Iet 'em all come! Our homo guard trill consist of a few dozen boxes of vermin-killer. They daren't ap proach that. m 0 In the City of CnnrcneB. Salem Journal. Small boy to Sunday school teacher Please sir, I swallowed my penny; what .shall I do? Salem Sunday school teacher Why, cough up, of course. ZJAI1.Y METEOROLOGICAL REPORT. PORTLAND, Jhn. 10. 8 P. M.
