The stock market dur ing the two hours of business today was verj' Irregular in Its movement, but in the main in clined toward higher prices, this tendency being due to the closing out of short contracts o-.er Sundaj. At the opening speculation was strong In tone, and a fractional advance was recorded. The improvement was not. however, maintained for a long time, a break of 15 in National Lead causing sympathetic reaction in the general market. New Jersy Central also broke 2. Eefore 11 o'clock the temper of speculation had undergone a change for the better. Lead having recovered z. New Jer sey Central rallied la on covering of short con tracts, and the rest of the list moved up under similar Influences. About 11:30 there was a slight reaction, but In the final trading the market was In good tone, the greater part of the shares dealt In being to l-t higher on the da-. Speculation was restricted in the early part of the week, as but little hope was entertained of congressional relief to the financial situa tion, and the gold-bond bill added slightly to the existing depression. Another factor of weakness was the unfavorable reports of rail road earnings, notably thoe of the granger roads. The bears attempted to exaggerate -the Importance of the purchase of some gold in the open market, the buvers paj Ing a commission of 2 to J-i per cent to bullion-brokers, but the ef fort to create a scare on the gold premium v. as ineffective. Northwest was a feature of the share speculation throughout the week, and suffered from heavj liquidation. Tobacco wa forced down 7'4 to S4. The primarj" cause of the break was a current rumor to the effect that an insider was selling the stock. In the latter part of the week there were evidences of Inside bujing, which resulted in: a rally of 4Vi per cent. Street gosip to the effect that the affairs of the United States Cordage Com pany would soon e transferred to the care of receivers resulted In a slump in the stocks. The closing trading of the w-ek disclosed a de mandfor'the Issue, and thej- marked up 4's, 6"s and 14'4, repectlv elj the net looses being only is for common, 1 for preferred, and 3j for the guaranteed. Sugar, while most promi nent in the trading, moved within compara-tlvelj- narrow limits. In a majority of In stances the last figures of the week are below those of the preceding week. Aggregate sales for the week were S00.300 shares. The bond market today was firm, bnt dull, the sales aggregating $300,010. The trading during the week wa extremely uninteresting, save In a few mortgages. The final sales are for the. most part below the figures prevailing a week ago. Go-, eminent bonds shoved more activity than for pome time past, the combined sales aggre gating 530,000. Tl.e 5s show an advance of , and the 4s of i per cent, which Is due to the high bids made for the new 4 per cent loan taken by the sjndicate. Government bonds Strong and higher. State bond-Dull. WHEN THE present financial cnsls started In, one of the banks In this citj- went under, and, in going down, dragged with them one of our most promising mill and lumber factories In the citj. The receiver has now reached a point where he must sell the propertj, and has ac cordingly placed the whole thing in our hands. The plant consists cf four lots right m the heart of the tltj. with a sawmill, planlng mlll, drjklln. raltroad switch, v. 1th planers, sawing machines, cut-off saws, table saw, blower and shavlng-eonvejor. boilers, engine, heaters, dj-narros. belting, shafting, pullej-s. etc., galore; in short, one of the best-equipped plants in the Northwest. The firm d'd a fine business, having their mills up the Columbia, and In California, and, by their unequaled facilities, did an enormous business, shipping to all parts of the civilized world. It was started and carried on by a joung man who did business on borrowed capltul. and. when the panic came on. naturallj' enough he could not get the monej to swing such a large busi ness, and the inevitable followed. Tins prop erty here In thf citj actuallj cost $50,000. and the bark's receiver has authorized us to sell It at 50 cents on the doll-.r. leaving a bar gain which a mill nan could not duplicate. The advantages of Oregon as a lumber state are too well known to need comment, and the fact that prominent Eastern mill men are continually buying up the best timoer land in this section show 3 that the lumber busi ness will be in the future even more than it has been in the past the best business ard principal Industrj of the Northwest. There 13 200 feet of river front beloncing to other parties adjoining this plant, and to an ln estor we could secure that river front at a reasonable figure. Manj- of our prominent citizens here have made their fortunes in the lumber business, and here is a chance for somebodj- else to do the same.
