TBB ITOBKTN'Q- OBOSTIAST, OTOSSDAT", JAJFUA11Y .15, 1S93. WALLACE IS DOUBTFUL. He Think the Armenian. Massacre Report Greatly Exaggerated, SYRACUSE, X. Y., Jan. 1. General "Lew Wallace, formerly minister to Tur key, Is here to lecture on "Ben Hur," his xaost renowned historical romance. He was Interviewed on the Armenian ques tion, lie said: "It the reports we have received con cerning these massacres and outrages are true. I think the whole Christian world should unite in demanding the punishment of the perpetrators. But I withhold my opinion for the present, for I have crave doubts of their truth. There is a ring- of exaggeration about them and the whole affair seems to me as if a conspiracy were abroad in the world, the object of which Is not yet apparent. As to whether the sultan is guilty, as accused, of ordering these atrocities, I know it is false. J. Jcr.ew Abdul Hamld II very well while at tis court, and have personal knowledge cf his character and nature. Gladstone, to use a homely expression, 'has gone off half-cocked.' Gladstone always hated the Turks, and when he was premier his con duct was such that he several times came Aery near sacrificing the entente cordiale between Turkey and England. The best informed man on the Armenians in Araer i a, probably, is Dr. Cyrus Hamlin, of Boston, who has published several state ments showing that the whole affair is an Armenian conspiracy directed against the Turks. I accept his opinions and sen timents in preference to Gladstone's. The Americans are easily excited and aroused, and I suggest that they wait for full re ports from the International commission which has been appointed for the purpose of investigation." A MINER'S DAUGHTER. Her Parent Died Long Ago, and. She In Xoxv Searching for Relatives. CLEVELAND. Jan. 14. John McAlvoy. cf Butte, Mont., has been in Cleve land for two or three days looking for the relatives of his ward, a beautiful young woman, who goes by the name of Miss Celia F. Steiner. The search here was un availing, and McAlvoy will now visit New York, Boston and Philadelphia in the hope that he may find somf- clew to the girl's relatives. In 1878 a man and woman ar rived in Butte from the East. The man was known as "Tramp Charley," and his little daughter was called the "Little Jewel" by the miners. In 1S79 the mother of the little one died, and "Tramp Char Icy" started for Arizona with the child, in comnanv with McAlvoy and C. L. Steiner. On the "way they were attacked by Indians. "Tramp Charley" was killed. The other men flipped a coin for the pos session of the child and Steiner won. He took the girl, gave her his name, and when she grew up was sent to a seminary li educated. Afterwards Steiner went to Central America, where he died. Then Mc Alvoy became the girl's guardian. When she was graduated she asked McAlvoy to tell her about her parents. He did so. and she expressed a desire to find her rela tives. That was what prompted the search that is now being prosecuted. Miss Steiner will accompany her guardian East, and If the search for her relatives is un successful, they will go to Europe next Bammc. Petrified Ilody Identified. "WACO. Tex., Jan. 14. Saturday a trap per found In the sand of a bank of Brazos river a petrified man. entire as to every 1'nib and feature. The stomach cavity presented a hollow filled by sand. The body had been disemboweled. When ex posed to -view on the public square, the letrified man was quickly identified as Bill Johnson, a famous outlaw, who ter rorized the Brazos valley in the '50s. When he was 20 years old Bill had slain two men. He rode Into Waco In 1S30, and the sheriff, with a strong posse, undertook Bill's arrest. After a terrific battle. In which Bill slew two and wounded three or the posse, ha fell riddled, by bullets. Lynchers hanged the desperado, and, aft er an autopsy by surgeons, some of whom live here still. In which Bill was disem boweled, he was buried on a bank over looking the Brazos river. The counte nance looks like a cast from a death mask. Struck with a stick, the body gives a metallic sound. 111m Life Saved. ly a Friend. LEBANON. Mo.. Jan. 14. Word has reached here of the hanging of Reuben Garner by a mob of indignant neighbors near Celt postoftlce. Dallas county, Thurs day. Garner was accused of robbing the store of Hunt & Fowler at that place last week, and a crowd of 10 or 12 neighbors went to his home, took him out, strung him up to a tree and left him suspended, his feet a short distance from the ground. A friend of Garner's, who was present when the party called for him, followed tho would-be lynchers, and no sooner had they Wt their victim than he was there to rescue him. and, speedily cutting the rope, succeeded, after vigorous efforts, in resuscitating Garner, who has since left tho neighborhood.
